The Snug

Lower Pacific Heights

A welcoming yet refined drinking destination, this Lower Pac Heights bar is exactly what the well-heeled and fun-loving neighborhood needs. It’s the rare bar that emphasizes clever cocktails, in-high-demand local craft beer, and smartly selected wine in equal parts. Elevated takes on bar bites like yellowtail poke and sesame naan with shiitake mushroom hummus are created by a chef formerly at some of the country’s gastronomic heavyweights (Benu, Alinea). As a reflection of its firm belief in living wages, in lieu of tips the Snug adds a 20% "fair-wage surcharge" to every bill.

Snug Harbor

Faubourg Marigny

This intimate club with a sometimes-steep cover charge ($25--$35) is one of the city's best rooms to soak up local and touring jazz. It is the home base of such esteemed talent as vocalist Charmaine Neville, who plays most Mondays. The dining room serves good local food but is best known for its burgers.

SOB's

West Village

The initials stand for \"Sounds of Brazil\" (no, not what you—and everybody else—might think), and this is the place for reggae, African, and Latin music, with some jazz gigs sprinkled into the mix. Tito Puente Jr. sometimes holds court here, as does calypso's Mighty Sparrow when he's up north. Don't miss the Haitian dance parties, the after-work Latin-groove happy hour, or the Bollywood-themed bashes. There's usually about a $25 cover charge, and while there is a food menu, it's better to just come for the music.

Social

Head down, down, down to this sexy, underground cocktail bar in Old Town with trendy industrial decor. Social feels like a speakeasy, with its expert cocktails, a curated wine list, and more absinthe than anyone should ever try. Absorb it all with a charcuterie plate. Both casual and fancy attire fit in fine here.

Social on the Square

This sleek, modern wine bar set in a renovated house with a great outdoor space brings a whole cosmopolitan vibe to Wimberley, thanks to its Pinterest-worthy subway tile and living wall sculpture. This is the perfect spot to stop for a glass and a charcuterie board or hummus plate when walking around town shopping.

Societe Brewing Company

Old Town

It took founder and CEO Doug Constantiner 10 years to open a second location of Societe, his award-winning brewery that originally opened in 2012. But when he did, he chose Old Town to start pouring their high-quality lagers and ales, which flow from over a dozen taps as well as a selection of cans. The indoor space feels cozy and tucked away, while the outside patio overlooks a bustling thoroughfare in the center of Old Town. San Diego craft beer prides itself on IPAs and Societe is no exception, with numerous hop-forward options to choose from.

Sofia Wine Bar

Midtown East

This family-owned wine-bar is a neighborhood gem with wine sourced from all over the world, and the homemade recipes and handmade pizzas create an authentic Italian vibe. The dimly lit venue features a mix of unique art amid this intimate space full of exposed brick, rustic wood furnishings, and chandeliers. Global wine lovers and locals alike appreciate the vast selection of old- and new-world wines (by the glass or bottle), including a special wine of the month, that all can be paired with made-from-scratch small plates. While their classic margarita pizza is a perfect selection, their burrata pizza with a fresh plum tomato sauce is quite delicious.

Sonsie

Back Bay

The crowd spilling through French doors onto the sidewalk café in warm weather consists of trendy cosmopolitans, fun-loving professionals, local sports celebs, and scenesters who have flocked to the contemporary spot for decades. The sophisticated jazz-rock soundtrack remains at a civilized volume as you dine, sip, and people-watch. Order any of the martinis that earn a solid rep among the locals, and follow with a brick-oven pizza off their late-night menu.

Uptown

This casual restaurant and bar offers live music, mostly jazz, on Wednesday through Sunday nights. It also has reasonably priced appetizers and cocktails and excellent views of the sun setting over the red rocks if you're lucky enough to grab a table on the outside deck.

South

The epitome of a laid-back neighborhood bar, South is known for its friendly bartenders, free popcorn, and extra-long happy hours. Lingering is encouraged and easy to do, especially on a weekend afternoon outside on the patio. There are board games to borrow, too.

South Restaurant and Jazz Club

Fairmount

Besides an evening of live jazz, purchasing a ticket for a performance in the club's intimate 75-seat, modern-industrial space reserves a table so you can order drinks and good upscale Southern fare (separate cost) before and during the show. It's a nice setting for hearing different jazz styles from local, regional, and global artists; the dress code is dressy casual. The club shares a menu with South Restaurant, a separate space in the same building.

South Shore Tiki Lounge

Good eats are paired with cool tunes in this breezy tropical tavern that's favored by locals. DJs and other acts are featured from 4 to 6 pm most evenings, and DJs get the dance floor shaking again starting at 9 pm. Happy hour specials run from 11 am to 6 pm.

Southampton Social Club

This is the place to come to if you want to be part of the Hamptons "scene." Although dinner is served here, the party doesn't really get started until 11 pm, with live music or DJs, and goes until the wee hours Thursday through Saturday. Come early—around 10—to have a drink at the bar and a (pricey) bite to eat to avoid lines. Make sure to dress your best. Although it's mainly a summer spot, it may be open Saturday nights fall through early January, and hosts special events throughout the year.

Southern Grist Brewing

East Nashville

For lovers of adventurous varieties of beer, Southern Grist is a must-visit. Check out inventive brews like the Money Moves milk stout and the BroCoNut coconut IPA (note that all offerings are seasonal and vary depending on availability). For a great in-house meal, stop by the inventive and surprising Lauter.

Southern Grist Brewing Company - The Nations Taproom

The Nations

Local brewer Southern Grist serves pints and flights of their brews in their industrial-style taproom in The Nations. Their often fruity, sometimes sour, but always creative brews pair well with the in-house bites.

Southpark Seafood

Downtown

With its extensive wine list and proximity to Downtown theaters and museums, this wine and cocktail bar is a perfect spot for a post-concert drink, with a notable list of Northwest bottles. Don't miss the sustainably fished seafood and dozen-plus varieties of oysters.

The Sovereign

Georgetown

With two bars serving 50 beers on tap and another 350 in bottles, The Sovereign's devotion is not in doubt. The staff knows the menu inside and out, so they can recommend the ideal beer for your taste. If you're hungry, too, the menu focuses on tasty Belgian fare like mussels with herbed mayonnaise.

Sovereign Remedies

Offering creative craft cocktails and a classed-up cool atmosphere (though it's still Asheville casual), this is one of the city's best spots for locally sourced farm-to-glass delights. The light-filled space boasts high ceilings, large mirrors, locally built furnishings, and a huge array of spirits. Servers and bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable.

The Spaniard

Greenwich Village

Despite the name, this spacious spot with a huge wraparound bar and cozy booths is not Spanish themed. Instead, it's a dimly lit spot for solid cocktails and better-than-average pub grub that will quench your taste buds and fill your tummy to add longevity to a night of imbibing. There is a large selection of signature cocktails with an emphasis on whisky-laced concoctions. Excellent bar bites include polenta and meatballs, charbroiled oysters, and cassoulet.

Spanish Galleon Night Club

A '50s-era neon sign welcomes revelers into this classic dance hall inside the Ocean Drive Resort, where DJs and a regular rotation of rock and beach music bands perform every weekend. The Shaggers Hall of Fame is also located here, in the OD Beach Club.

The Spare Room

Hollywood

This Hollywood Roosevelt cocktail bar is worth a visit for its luscious cocktails, elevated bar bites, and collection of classic board games. It can get a little too crowded, especially on the weekends, but if you come early, you should be able to admire its art deco appeal and perhaps enjoy a game at one of its two vintage bowling lanes.

Speakeasy

With a loungy-chill vibe, this quaint neighborhood bar is a great place to grab a beer and bite to eat (like the popular avocado fries) with friends. The crowd is friendly if a bit loud, and the Friday night live music always good.

Speakeasy

Downtown

Although Austin is better known for hole-in-the-wall bars, live music venues, and couture cocktail emporiums, this club is one of the main spots in the city. It is almost too trendy for Austin, but visitors may enjoy the 1920s speakeasy feel and rooftop views. This downtown establishment always play hosts to a variety of SXSW acts, too.

Speakeasy

Downtown

This downtown live music venue is composed of three levels; the first floor bowling mezzanine (a lounge area complete with two vintage bowling lanes that overlook the music lounge stage); the second-floor Ballroom concert space and Prohibition-themed Kabaret Room; and the Terrace59 rooftop lounge. There is live music and late-night dance parties almost every night, with extended showcases during SXSW. The Spazmatics, a beloved local '80s and '90s tribute band, perform on the Ballroom stage to packed audiences every Wednesday night.

Spearfish Creek Wine Bar

Although not actually alongside the creek as its name implies, this quiet spot has a wood privacy fence surrounding the outdoor seating area, and vines growing around the entrance. It's a great place to enjoy a relaxing glass of wine on a warm summer evening. There's also a small indoor seating area, and often live, acoustic music from local and regional performers.

Specs' Twelve Adler Museum Cafe

If you're into bohemian dive bars, you can groove on this hidden hangout for artists, poets, and heavy-drinking old-timers. Specs' bar is a women-owned and  -run institution and a beloved fixture. It's one of the few remaining old-fashioned watering holes in North Beach that still smack of the Beat years and the 1960s. Though it's just off a busy street, Specs' is strangely immune to the hustle and bustle outside.

Spirit Room

On weekends, there's live music and a lively scene at the Spirit Room. The mural over the bar harks back to the days when it was a dining spot for the prostitutes of the red-light district.
