Major chains, such as Hilton, Holiday Inn, Days Inn, and Comfort Inn, are represented in the major population centers such as Odessa, Midland, and El Paso. It may be difficult to find lodging in smaller towns.

In the Panhandle, finding a place to stay won't be difficult, but choosing from so many options might be. Lubbock and Amarillo offer the most options, but all of the major towns host major, reliable hotel chains—everything from the humble motor lodge to semi high-rises and extended-stay lodging. There are great RV options, too, from more basic parks to "ranches" offering pools, wireless Internet, and cable. Camping in Palo Duro Canyon outside of Amarillo is awe-inspiring but requires reservations. There are off-beat choices for the more adventurous, too—like the smattering of bed-and-breakfasts, usually built into historic homes evoking the Victorian era, Texas-style. There are also some dude ranches here—that is, working ranches that host guests and include them in ranching activities like horseback riding and the occasional cattle drive. Giddy up!

Following a five-year closure and a tremendously ambitious renovation and rebranding, this 1912 grande dame with an enormous Tiffany-designed, stained-glass dome suspended above the bar reopened in 2020 as part of Marriott's posh Autograph Collection. The airy, artfully decorated rooms contain Southwestern and Mexican fabrics and furnishings. Creative Latin American–inspired fare is served in Sabor restaurant, and there's also a swanky steakhouse and a hip rooftop bar. It's steps from downtown museums, the handsome minor league baseball park, and the border bridge to Ciudad Juárez.

The region's swankiest lodging, in the heart of downtown Marfa, has an airy lobby and common spaces hung with museum-quality local contemporary artwork, and houses Bar Saint George, LaVenture restaurant, and renowned Marfa Book Company. The 55 spacious rooms and suites have plenty of luxe touches, including plush platform beds, naturalistic hand-carved wood furniture, Illy espresso machines, 49-inch TVs, and large bathrooms with walk-in showers and Aesop soaps and shampoos. Those on the top (fourth) floor afford expansive views of downtown and the surrounding high desert. Across the street, guests hobnob and sunbathe around the hotel's large pool while sipping and snacking on goodies from poolside Bar Nadar. Nonguests can purchase day passes to the pool.

It's a bit of a surprise finding this minimalist compound of neomodern concrete casitas in funky Terlingua, just a few miles from Big Bend's Maverick Entrance Station no less—indeed, this exquisitely designed and decorated complex on a 287-acre spread with panoramic views of the Chisos Mountains is quite posh by any standard. The angular casitas have private patios and carefully curated modern art, textiles, and furnishings. Guests can relax and mingle in a shared main house with a state-of-the-art kitchen, outdoor grill, and several indoor and outdoor dining spaces.

Cibolo Creek Ranch

It was converted from a military fort by a 19th-century cattle baron and occupies 30,000 acres of a volcanic caldera cupped by the Chinati and Cienega mountains. You'll be welcomed as a friend and relax in one of three 1800s-era forts, each at a different site, but all beautifully restored. Everything here is first-class, authentic, and memorable, including meals featuring international flavors based on ancient Mexican culinary traditions. You can choose the pace for your activities: ride a horse or read a book; jump in a Humvee or slide back under the covers; go bird hunting or bird-watching.
