Fodor's Expert Review Dixon Gallery and Gardens
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
The 17 acres of formal and informal gardens and woodlands make Dixon Gallery and Gardens a bucolic enclave near the heart of the city. The Georgian-style estate and its superb art collections once belonged to the late Margaret and Hugo Dixon, philanthropists and cultural leaders. French and American impressionist paintings, British portraiture and landscapes, and the Stout Collection of 18th-century German porcelain are on display. In the gardens regional plants flourish. The 2-acre Woodland Garden, a cutting garden, the Stout Camellia House conservatory, and statuary contribute to the oasis. At the summer outdoor film series, the back lawn fills with picnickers and fireflies. Other garden entertainment includes jazz performances, symphonies, and more.
