Dawa's

$$ | Woodside Fodor's Choice

This quaint, plant-filled space is brighter and more stylish than your average dumpling-slinger in Queens. That makes sense when you look at the menu, which mixes creative takes on Himalayan classics like perfectly crimped momos (dumplings stuffed with meat or veggies) in a tomato and fenugreek sauce or thenthuk (pulled noodles), as well as American comfort food like buttermilk fried chicken, grass-fed beef burgers, and a kale salad with house-made ricotta. The cocktails are similar global standouts, employing ingredients like masala, tamarind, or tajin spice mix, and there are natural wines on the menu.

Deadwood Social Club

$$$ Fodor's Choice

On the second floor of historic Saloon No. 10, this warm restaurant surrounds you with wood and old-time photographs of Deadwood. Light jazz and blues play over the sound system. The decor is Western, but the food is northern Italian, a juxtaposition that keeps patrons coming back. Try the wild boar bundles as an appetizer, paired with one of numerous martinis or a bottle from one of the largest wine cellars in the state. The menu stretches from pheasant to walleye, as well as creamy pasta dishes, buffalo, and melt-in-your-mouth rib-eye steaks. Reservations are recommended.

The Deck Bar & Grill

$$ Fodor's Choice

Located at Linekin Bay Resort, this casual, mostly outdoor restaurant offers a serene waterside setting coupled with fresh lobster rolls, haddock BLTs, mussels, crab cakes, crudo yellowfin tuna, fish tacos, and clams linguine. There are plenty of meat, gluten-free, and vegan options, too. The resort and the restaurant are only a few minutes' drive east of downtown Boothbay Harbor, but the chill atmosphere seems a million miles away. There's often live music on weekends.

Deckhand Dave's

$$ Fodor's Choice

A former park in the middle of downtown Juneau has been transformed into a vibrant outdoor food court thanks to Deckhand Dave, a commercial fisherman who has acquired a loyal local following for his foodtruck-prepared rockfish and halibut tacos. Significantly expanded in 2024, the backyard patio atmosphere includes tents, heat lamps, firepits, and a ship-shaped bar.

Deep Creek Coffee Company

$ Fodor's Choice

Stop by this cheerful coffeehouse with hanging plants and several tables on a spacious side patio to fuel up before your big park adventure or to grab some healthy sustenance for later. Hearty cacao-acai and chipotle aioli–quinoa bowls, toast with goat cheese and fresh strawberries, bagels with the requisite schmears, breakfast burritos, and house-made granola are among the tasty offerings. There's also a nice selection of camp mugs, travel tumblers, and coffee-related gifts.

Deetjen's Big Sur Inn

$$$ Fodor's Choice

The candle-lighted, creaky-floor restaurant in the main house at the historic inn of the same name is a Big Sur institution. It serves spicy seafood paella, grass-fed filet mignon, and rack of lamb for dinner and flavorful eggs Benedict for breakfast.

Delancey

$$ Fodor's Choice

Brandon Pettit spent years developing his thin-but-chewy pizza crust, and the final product has made him a contender for the city's best pies. Neighborhood families and far-flung travelers alike line up before opening time for seasonal pizzas topped with anything from fresh sausage and local clams to blistered padrón peppers and cremini mushrooms. The small wine list is well edited and elegant; desserts are simple but inspired—the homemade chocolate chip cookie with sea salt is delicious. Long wait? Pop next door to charming Essex, the couple's artisanal cocktail bar.  A coveted few reservations are permitted via Tock.com.

Delmonico's

$$$ Fodor's Choice

Utica's Italian community has gathered for years at Delmonico's, which bills itself as a steak house but really dishes up some of the region's most authentic Italian food. For an appetizer, try some Utica greens—sturdy greens cooked with olive oil, hot and sweet peppers, ham, and cheese. Rachel Ray did, and loved them so much she devoted a show to them. If you're not too full from the huge portions, sample the chicken Sinatra, which is simmered with hot peppers, mozzarella, and mushrooms. A waitress in pinstripes and a fedora will bring your food and offer you a selection from a long and tasty wine list.

Dennett’s at the Wharf

$$$ Fodor's Choice

After being all but completely destroyed by the winter storms of 2024, this on-the-dock local institution was rescued by the volunteerism of Castine's citizens, who literally helped rebuild it by hand. Now it's run by an ambitious group of young, hardworking hospitality folks who offer a limited but solid menu of classics like lobster rolls with garlic-butter thyme sauce, lobster Cobb salad, and slow-cooked pork tacos. The beverage program includes local beer, craft cocktails, and wines. Enjoy as much of it on the waterside deck as you can.

Denver Milk Market

$ Fodor's Choice

As if chef and restaurateur Frank Bonanno didn't have enough on his plate with nine other eateries---including Mizuna, Luca, and Osteria Marco---he opened this market hall containing two bars and 12 food counters. Among the offerings: a reworking of a former Bonanno eatery, Lou's Hot and Naked, and its Nashville-style fried chicken; fresh seafood at Albina by the Sea; wood-fired pizza at Bonanno Brothers Pizzeria; handmade pasta from Mano Pastaria; and boozy milkshakes and freshly crafted soft-serve at Cornicello Gelato.

Dept of Culture

$$$$ | Bed-Stuy Fodor's Choice

At this unassuming storefront, you wouldn't be able to tell that this Nigerian restaurant has garnered high praise from many food critics, but owner-chef Ayo Balogun doesn't just prepare a meal for an intimate party of 16 guests sitting around a communal table, he takes diners on a nostalgic journey, through food and personal storytelling, to the north-central Nigeria of his childhood in the early 1980s. Classic dishes like pepper soup, asaro (yam porridge), and egusi (a creamy, nutty soup) are elevated through plating, while old Nigerian tunes play on vinyl, and art and old photos hang on the wall. Descanso Beach Club

$$ Fodor's Choice

Set on an expansive deck overlooking the water and a few boats, Descanso Beach Club serves a wide range of favorites: grilled burgers, street tacos, clam chowder, salads, and layered nachos. Try the island's sweet signature cocktail, Buffalo Milk---a mix of fruit liqueurs, vodka, and whipped cream. Firepits and chic beach cabanas add to the scene, as does the sound of happy and terrified screams from the zipliners in the canyon above the beach. There is a shop to purchase beach items, and a stand to rent kayaks and snorkel equipment.

Deschutes Brewery Portland Public House

$$ Fodor's Choice

The Portland branch of the Bend-based Deschutes Brewery typically has 26 beers on tap, including nationally acclaimed mainstays Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Inversion IPA, and Black Butte Porter, plus seasonal and experimental brews. On the food side, the talented kitchen staff have made this a worthy destination for elevated pub fare, such as Manila clams steamed in cider, Nashville-style hot chicken and waffles, and peanut butter–pork belly burgers.

A dark, intimate wine bar and restaurant with hardwood floors and richly colored banquette seating, Détente serves more than a dozen wines by the glass as well as numerous half bottles. Even if you're not much of an oenophile, it's worth a trip just for the innovative food, much of it from local farms and seafood purveyors. Owned by a husband and wife, the menu reflects their travels; think of it as Europe-meets-New England on a plate.

Devil's Teeth Baking Company

$ | Sunset Fodor's Choice

Folks line up on weekends for the amazing breakfast sandwiches here: fluffy eggs, thick bacon, pepper jack, avocado, and lemon-garlic aioli on a melt-in-your-mouth buttermilk biscuit. Made-to-order beignets are another favorite. Lunch options include chicken curry salad sandwiches, BLTs, and a seasonal soup of the day. Browse the bakery's selection of used books from local favorite Green Apple while you wait, and if you can't get a spot among the limited sidewalk seating, the beach is close by. A second location in the Outer Richmond ( 3619 Balboa St.) has the same crowd and delectable menu, but parking is much easier here.

Devoción

$ Fodor's Choice
At this coffee shop with roots in Bogotá, the beauty of the space is matched by the quality of the coffee, which comes exclusively from small farms in Colombia. Fresh beans are brought directly to Brooklyn, where they're roasted on-site within a few days of arrival. Take a seat on one of the leather sofas under the skylight or at a table in front of the living wall, and enjoy a cappuccino with one of the homemade medialunas or croissants. The stylish space has books, magazines, and even dominoes—perfect for a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Di Fara Pizza

$$ Fodor's Choice
Brooklyn legend Domenico De Marco has been handcrafting pizzas with top-quality ingredients in this Midwood storefront since 1965, and even the locals wait upward of an hour (and sometimes two) for pizza that's a contender for best in the greater New York area. You can order a slice ($5), but you're better off with a whole pie, because the pizza maker waits until there are enough slice orders to complete a pie. The "classic" is topped with sausage, peppers, mushrooms, and onions ($33), but the "regular" ($29) lets you appreciate the pure goodness. The small, worn space has a handful of tables (no table service), so don't expect anything fancy. For a shorter wait, arrive well before they open at noon.

Dillinger's

$ Fodor's Choice
The Soviet-era childhoods of its two owners inspired the food and decor of this casual coffeehouse that has impressed the neighborhood with its Russian-inflected lunch and brunch fare. Popular dishes include the buckwheat-and-kale salad and the avocado toast, both topped with a fried egg if desired. Cheburashka sweetened coffee, named after a character from Russian children's literature, is the signature drink. It's tempting to linger here, either in the sunny front room or, in warm weather, on the large back patio.

Dim Sum Garden

$ | Chinatown Fodor's Choice

A sleek new location for this Philadelphia stalwart means more space, a full bar, and less waiting for Dim Sum Garden's exemplary soup dumplings, but you can still sneak a peek through the window in the middle of the dining room to see the restaurant's staff fold the delicate wrappings around the porky fillings. The family-owned restaurant also does a brisk business in hand-stretched noodles, steamed chicken dumplings, and pan-fried beef dumplings.

Diner

$$ | Williamsburg Fodor's Choice

The word \"diner\" might evoke a greasy spoon, but this trendsetting restaurant under the Williamsburg Bridge is nothing of the sort. It occupies a 1927 dining car, and foodies cram into the booths to partake in eclectic dishes from the regularly changing menu, based on seasonal ingredients from farms in the Greater New York area. They're also known for their grass-fed burger, available year-round. Andrew Tarlow—the godfather of Brooklyn's farm-to-table culinary renaissance—opened it in 1999 and launched an entire movement.

Dining at the Landing

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

On the ground floor of The Landing Hotel, this intimate, upscale restaurant serves elegantly prepared dishes, with a regularly changing menu offering everything from sockeye salmon to Italian rib-eye steak. Desserts like Gateau au Chocolate are worth saving room for (or taking to go for a late-night treat). The breakfast offerings aren't too shabby either, with breakfast sandwiches, hot daily specials, baked goods, and high-end tea and espresso drinks.
