55 Best Hotels in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Background Illustration for Hotels

Philadelphia has lodgings for every style of travel. Thanks to the Pennsylvania Convention Center and a hotel-building boom in the late 1990s, some mid-price chains have moved into town or have spruced up their accommodations. If you have greater expectations, you need look no further than the city's handful of swank hotels, each with its own gracious character.

Budget, moderate, and luxury properties are spread throughout the downtown area. The Historic Area, on the east side of downtown, centers on Independence Hall and extends to the Delaware River, and is a good base for sightseeing. Old City and Society Hill lodgings are also convenient for serious sightseeing; Society Hill is the quietest of the three areas. For business-oriented trips, Center City encompasses the heart of the downtown business district, centered around Broad and Market streets, and Rittenhouse Square hotels are also nearby.

If you prefer to keep your distance from the tourist throngs, check out the Benjamin Franklin Parkway–Museum Area along the parkway from 16th Street to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There are also a couple of hotels in University City—just across the Schuylkill River in West Philadelphia and close to the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University—a 5- to 10-minute drive or taxi ride from Center City.

The Independent

$$$ | 1234 Locust St., Philadelphia, PA, 19107, USA

The Independent is among a handful of newer boutique alternatives to Philadelphia's big convention hotels. This property features 24 well-appointed, hip rooms that are all uniquely furnished, but share a warm butterscotch and ocher palette with funky accents, such as leopard-print rugs, exposed brick walls, and copper-tiled ceilings. The hotel's corridors ring a skylighted four-story atrium adorned with local art. Complimentary wine and cheese are served daily in the cozy lobby, and continental breakfast is offered daily, too. Little Nonna's, and Bud and Marilyn's, two eateries from prolific Philly restaurateurs Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, occupy the ground floor of the hotel. The Independent prefers guests to be 21 or older.

Pros

  • Tasteful, warm decor makes you feel like you're staying with friends
  • Rooms larger than some luxury properties
  • Good on-site restaurants

Cons

  • Noisy neighborhood
  • No on-site parking
  • No room service

Le Méridien Philadelphia

$$$$ | 1421 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA, 19102, USA

Offering an alternative to more standard chain hotels near the convention center, the 10-story Le Méridien occupies an old YMCA built in 1908 that has maintained some architectural character. The contrast between the building's inherent charm, such as the ornate woodwork lining the archways of the airy lobby, and the hotel's modern decor comes off smoothly. Landings for the upper floors are cantilevered to the original brick wall of a 75-foot atrium that fills the property's center with natural light; some rooms have only a view of this atrium. The posh modern rooms (updated in 2024 and 2025), done in gray, beige, and white with pops of color, may seem a bit spare: some have only one mod chair besides the desk chair. Southern-facing rooms have views of City Hall. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the lobby.

Pros

  • Hipper alternative (for a Marriott) near convention center
  • 24-hour gym
  • Coffee and cocktails in the lobby gathering space

The Logan Philadelphia, Curio Collection by Hilton

$$$ | 1 Logan Sq., Philadelphia, PA, 19103, USA

Part of Hilton's independent Curio Collection, the Logan provides a relaxing retreat with gracious, contemporary public areas and guest rooms that blend modern style with natural materials and local touches, such as impressive installations of Philly-inspired art in common areas. Standard guest rooms, decorated in shades of beige and brown, have plenty of amenities but may seem a little monochromatic. Before or after sightseeing on the Parkway or elsewhere, guests can unwind by the fire in the spacious Commons Lounge or in the rooftop Assembly lounge with its spectacular city views. The Underground Spa & Wellness offers sophisticated treatments, and the gym has a heated indoor pool. If you don't feel like the good but steak-heavy menu at the mostly locally sourced, modern-farmhouse-look Urban Farmer restaurant, other options are close at hand.

  • Secluded ambience in a busy area
  • Indoor pool and 24-hour gym

Lokal Hotel

$$$$ | 139 N. 3rd St., Philadelphia, PA, 19106, USA

A unique boutique hotel that stands out from Old City’s numerous big-brand options, Lokal is owned by a husband-and-wife team that preaches the merits of “invisible service”—no front desks or on-site staff, with check-ins, deliveries, and the like handled by the guest via tech innovations and mobile apps. (Living, breathing employees are nearby and on call if needed.) Choose from a lineup of six on-site flats, some suited for singles and couples, others meant for families. Each is furnished in a hyper-clean Scandinavian style, with living rooms and fully equipped kitchens to prepare meals. Note that the converted building is a four-story walk-up with many stairs and no elevators.

Pros

  • Private boutique feel
  • Fully equipped kitchens

The Maj Hotel

$$ | 2225 Spring Garden St., Philadelphia, PA, 19130, USA

At this appealing modern, tech-forward boutique option a short stroll from the Philadelphia Art Museum, the cool industrial vibe (think concrete floors, exposed brick) is warmed up by plant-draped common areas, colorful art, and thoughtful design choices and finishes throughout. Most rooms aren't large, but they use space efficiently and have good-size bathrooms with smart mirrors; bedside lighting is controlled by smartphone (or a walk to a light switch). In season, there's seating outside the building, and the comfortable seating in the lobby and lots of tables by the coffee station create attractive spaces for relaxing or working year-round. The leafy streets of Fairmount and restaurants are a short walk from the hotel. A concierge screen is helpful, but someone is at the front desk to assist. The hotel has a fitness room, and public parking lots are nearby.

Pros

  • Superb location for those interested in museums and Fairmount Park
  • Good range of room types, and some have a patio or kitchenette
  • Modern building with effective soundproofing

Cons

  • Not best choice for the tech-averse
  • No full-service restaurant and no coffeemaker in many rooms
  • Coffee and snacks in café, but fuller breakfast just three days a week (restaurants are nearby)

Penn's View Hotel

$$$ | 14 N. Front St., Philadelphia, PA, 19106, USA

This cosmopolitan little hotel in a refurbished 19th-century commercial building on the fringe of Old City offers its own brand of urban charm. The owner is a well-regarded Italian-born restaurateur who also runs Ristorante Panorama, the downstairs eatery, and its wine bar, a Guinness World Records holder for its 120-bottle cruvinet system (they pour more than 150 wines by the glass). Rooms are comfortable and rather European looking, some with Chippendale-style furniture and floral wallpaper, others with a more modern feel; some rooms feature fireplaces, balconies, and whirlpool baths. Ask about rooms with views of the Delaware River.

Philadelphia Marriott Downtown

$$ | 1201 Market St., Philadelphia, PA, 19107, USA

This bustling convention hotel fills an entire city block, and for an intrinsically impersonal type of place, the Marriott tries hard to meet special needs; it also offers some of the lowest rates in its price category. The softly lit lobby has comfortable seating areas with a sushi bar and a Starbucks steps away. The more than 1,300 guest rooms are brightly decorated, and at no additional cost, you can request one of the hotel’s \"rooms that work,\" with adjustable desks and extra lighting and outlets. The on-site restaurants, Circ Bar and THIRTEEN, serve contemporary American food. If you're driving, you may want to park in a public parking lot, as the hotel charges upwards of $56 a night.

Pros

  • Centrally located
  • Clean rooms
  • Good for traveling families or businesspeople

Cons

  • Crowds, crowds, and more crowds
  • Parking is a whopping $56 or more a night

Residence Inn by Marriott Philadelphia Bala Cynwyd

$$$ | 615 Righters Ferry Rd., Bala Cynwyd, PA, 19004, USA

This hotel, part of the Ironworks at Pencoyd Landing, is a great option for those who want to be within 10 to 15 minutes of Manayunk and its nearby neighborhoods, as well as Center City, Old City, West Philly, and Fairmount, yet also want to have some space to stretch out (and be in the same building as Lark, one of the finest restaurants around). While the hotel caters particularly to visitors of nearby colleges, if you like to hike and bike, you can't beat this location close to the trails—the Schuykill River Path is across the pedestrian bridge, access to the edge of Wissahickon Valley Park is across that same bridge and then across the street, and the Cynwyd Heritage Trail is on the side of the hotel facing the river, also the best side to secure a room, which are all suites. The outside is quite spectacular, as the hotel was built within the framework of the old iron works, with gigantic metal beams interconnecting high above. The rooms themselves, though spacious with living room and kitchen areas, lack personality. There is a nice sized pool in an atrium that looks out on the river. Access to Manayunk is just across the one lane bridge—you can walk or bike across it, but only people who live in nearby condos can drive their cars across it. Manayunk's main action is a good 10-minute walk upstream on Main Street.

Pros

  • Great location with a pool
  • Excellent dining
  • Best access to bike trails

Cons

  • Rooms lack style
  • Can't drive on bridge to Manayunk
  • No stores nearby for stocking kitchen

The rooftop Skydeck has a firepit and small infinity pool, and Skyline Club Level suites offer upgraded amenities like a 65-inch smart TV. Downstairs are Con Murphy's, an Irish-themed pub with multiple seating areas and a well-rounded menu, and Asia on the Parkway, serving Asian fusion fare.
