Brandywine Valley Restaurants

It seems that most restaurants in both the Brandywine Valley and Bucks County serve American cuisine, with creative contemporary touches at the better establishments. You'll find both sophisticated restaurants and casual country spots. Most also present local specialties—fresh seafood from Chesapeake Bay and dishes made with Kennett Square mushrooms. As an added pleasure, some of the region's best restaurants are in restored Colonial and Victorian homes.

Fresh, locally sourced seafood, mushroom ragout vol-au-vent, and chateaubriand are among the entrées at this longtime favorite for romantic dining. The 15 dining rooms of the elegant 1754 country inn are carefully restored and decorated with antiques and Oriental rugs. The wine cellar, one of the region's best, stocks more than 800 vintages, including a merlot and a chardonnay bottled exclusively for the inn. Jackets are suggested for men. The restaurant also offers cooking and wine classes at its Inn Keeper's Kitchen.

Talula's has its own artisan cheeses, house-cured meats, and handmade breads and pastas, along with a coffee bar and prepared meals for takeout. The menu, which changes daily, includes treats like pulled pork enchiladas, exotic mushroom soup, roasted beet salad with candied pecans, and ham and Gruyère gougères. You can pick up the makings for a picnic or eat at the farmhouse table. Dinner at Talula's—with a prix-fixe offered only at night—is a particularly special treat that is so popular you have to book almost a year in advance, making it one of the Northeast's top restaurant reservations. But while only the select few can have dinner here, lunch is a more relaxed and inclusive experience.

Massive mirrors and silver beaded lighting fixtures create a fun and sexy vibe at this small café. Everything here is done up in the color purple—walls, tablecloths, and even the coffee mugs. The staff in the kitchen and dining room is attentive to details. Louisiana smoked alligator sausage and crawfish tails in a spicy barbecue sauce are popular starters. Jambalaya, étouffée, and other favorites from the French Quarter predominate, but you can also find seared ahi tuna and mesquite-grilled hangar steak on the menu. There's live music on the third Friday of each month.

An old Woolworth's building with tin ceilings and maple floors has been converted into this bustling restaurant and pub. Jaegerschnitzeland Hawaiian-spiced ahi tuna are two of the creatively prepared entrées. Smaller plates include a house-smoked barbecue pork sandwich, honey sriracha popcorn chicken, and pizzas baked in a wood oven. True to the name, the eatery also brews a large variety of beers and ales, many of which have won local awards. In warm weather the outdoor tables provide a nice spot for people-watching.

Chef Nicholas Farrell transforms local and organic ingredients into satisfying meals at this popular rustic restaurant, which is part French bistro and part Italian trattoria. A turkey "cheesesteak," hand-cut pasta in a wild-boar sauce, harissa-marinated skirt steak, and warm blueberry crisp with lemon gelato are highlights of the seasonal menu. Though a lunch of a BLT might sound mundane, it's anything but: the turkey bacon is local, the rye bread made in-house, and the toppings include avocado and chipotle mayonnaise.
