Fodor's Expert Review Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa

4000 Westcliff Dr., Hood River, Oregon, 97031, USA

The charming period-style rooms at this grande dame of Gorge hotels are fitted with plenty of wood, brass, and antiques and overlook the Gorge, impeccably landscaped formal gardens, or a 208-foot-high waterfall. The hotel's restaurant enjoys similarly dramatic views, although the food quality is inconsistent. Rates drop precipitously from fall through early spring.

PROS

  • historic structure built by Columbia Gorge Highway visionary Simon Benson
  • unbeatable Gorge views
  • full-service spa

CONS

  • smallish rooms for the price
  • rooms facing away from river pick up noise from nearby Interstate 84
  • often books up with weddings on summer and fall weekends
