Fodor's Expert Review Oregon Caves Chateau

20000 Caves Hwy., Cave Junction, Oregon, 97523, USA

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

This six-story wood-frame lodge, virtually unchanged since it was built in 1934, has a rustic authenticity and steep gabled roofs, while the simple rooms, all with their original furnishings, have canyon or waterfall views. Bare walls, old-fashioned radiators, and simple bedding are part of the charm. The dining room serves decent regional fare, using local wines, produce, and even buffalo from a nearby ranch.

PROS

  • on the grounds of the national monument
  • historic and funky personality
  • wonderfully tranquil setting

CONS

  • no-frills rooms
  • no Internet or phones (and very limited cell reception)
  • location well out of the way if you aren't visiting the caves
