Fodor's Expert Review Salt & Straw Ice Cream

$ Nob Hill Café Fodor's Choice

In 2011, cousins Kim and Tyler Malek started a business with a small pushcart and a humble idea—to create unique ice-cream flavors with quality, local ingredients. Today, Salt & Straw Ice Cream has grown into three brick-and-mortar ice-cream parlors around town (and several more in Los Angeles), and it is recognized as one of the best ice-cream makers in the nation; seasonal, local ingredients drive the flavors here, and constant experimentation keeps ice-cream lovers coming back. Ongoing favorites include almond brittle with salted ganache, pear and blue cheese, and honey-balsamic strawberry with black pepper, but each month five special concoctions are featured. Locally produced Woodblock chocolate bars and house-made salted-caramel sauce are among the toppings. The location in Nob Hill is handiest if you're staying at a Downtown hotel, but the original on Alberta and newest branch on S.E. Division Street are just as popular; they also run a soft-serve kiosk called Wiz Bang Bar in Pine Street Market. Expect a long line, but take heart in knowing that the patient staff works fast, even while encouraging patrons to sample the wildly imaginative flavors.
