For years, many of Portland's top restaurateurs have sourced their cheese from the shop of Steve Jones, who in 2011 was recognized as the "best cheese monger in the world" at New York City's prestigious Cheesemonger Invitational. This guy knows dairy, and his fromagerie near Mt. Tabor Park functions both as a specialty market and a cheese-lover's bistro. Open from 11 am to 11 pm, it's a fun stop for snacking: try the "stinky board" to sample two strong cheeses of the day with crostini, or one of the charcuterie plates. Heartier appetites could easily make a decadent meal of fondue, mac and cheese, or a ham-and-Emmentaler sandwich with mustard aioli. There's also an extensive selection of beers, wines, and aperitifs that pair nicely with these cheesy victuals.
