Omni Grove Park Inn

290 Macon Ave., Grove Park, Asheville, North Carolina, 28804, USA

This massive resort, which opened in 1913, has hosted 10 U.S. presidents from Woodrow Wilson to Barack Obama, and it's easy to see why, with its grand views of downtown Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains and resort amenities that include a golf course, top-rated spa, and variety of dining options. It's furnished with oak antiques in the Arts and Crafts style, and the lobby fireplaces are as big as cars. A flock of restaurants offers plenty of choices: Choose Edison for modern Southern food, Sunset Grill for the mountain view, and Blue Ridge for an upscale buffet. The spa, in a striking setting between two wings of the hotel, is one of the finest in the Southeast. There's a complete sports complex with tennis, racquetball, and indoor and outdoor pools, along with two museums and many shops. The 18-hole, 6,400-yard, par 70 course designed by Donald Ross sprawls gorgeously down a mountainside. Rooms in the original section are mostly smaller but have more character than those in the newer additions.
