Fodor's Expert Review The Chatwal New York

130 W. 44th St., between 6th and Broadway, New York, New York 10036, USA See on Map Fodor's Choice

A lavishly refurbished reincarnation of a classic Manhattan theater club, the Chatwal delivers a luxury experience with a matching price tag. The landmark building dates back to 1905 and offers old New York pleasures from classic cocktails at the bar to elegant fireside dining in the Lambs Club. Free bike rentals are available (with a custom map of New York parks) and the property also has a small pool, fitness center, and spa. A house car provides complimentary drop-off within a 20-block radius.

YOU SHOULD KNOW While the location is very convenient for Broadway theater, the busy Midtown block may not suit all guests' tastes.

Opulent yet understated rooms and suites have suede walls, faux-leather cabinets designed to resemble classic luggage, and iPads for seamlessly ordering room service or communicating with housekeeping. Photographs of old New York fit with the hotel’s Art Deco feel.

During the warm months, inquire about suites with terraces—some have furnished terraces that are as large as the rooms. The Producer Suite has a spiral staircase leading to a massive rooftop terrace.

Marble bathrooms have large TVs integrated into the mirrors, spacious rain showers, toilets with heated seats, and plush robes. You can watch TV in the bathroom to your heart's content.

The intimate lobby is a welcoming place to relax, with banquettes and leather couches, fresh flowers, marble floors, and soft background music. Art Deco accents nod to the building’s history and a double-height ceiling gives the cozy room a sense of space. A small bar brings a lively atmosphere in the evening.

A small pool appears to be more for dipping than swimming, but it has a feature that allows guests to swim against a current for exercise. There is also a small, but well-appointed Red Door Spa.

With a roaring fireplace and plush red leather banquettes, the Lambs Club from Chef Geoffrey Zakarian is a neighborhood dining destination. Jazz brunches and Broadway brunches are popular events in the white tablecloth clad dining room, but it’s the beloved lobster rolls, burgers, and dry-aged steaks that turn locals into regulars.

Bartenders wearing crisp white jackets mix martinis at the Chatwal Lobby Lounge, a small bar at one end of the lobby. The Chatwal’s Mezzanine Bar provides extra room to raise a glass in an airy space with floor-to-ceiling windows and red leather chairs.

Getting Around

Located on West 44th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue, this hotel is in a prime position for exploring the landmarks of Midtown Manhattan on foot. The theaters of Broadway are also within easy walking distance. Subway access is excellent, with the B, D, F, M, and 7 trains available at 42nd Street/Bryant Park and the 1, 2, and 3 trains at 42nd Street/Times Square.

Chef Daniel Boulud is behind db Bistro Moderne (3-minute walk), a modern French restaurant that serves a famous burger stuffed with foie gras. A variety of quality food is served fast at Urbanspace Vanderbilt (10-minute walk), a food hall with stalls serving everything from pizza to oysters to bowls of ramen. Despite the name, Coffeemania Restaurant (5-minute walk) is much more than a café; this airy restaurant serves salads, pastas, and seafood in addition to a varied coffee and pastry menu.

Escape the crowded Midtown streets for a quiet drink at Lantern’s Keep (3-minute walk), one of the neighborhood’s best cocktail bars. Morrell Winebar (9-minute walk) serves more than 150 wines by the glass and has lovely outdoor space during the warmer months.

This glamorous hotel has a timeless appeal, both in the common spaces and the polished rooms. We love the rooms with big terraces, the house car with complimentary drop-off in a 20-block radius, and the elegant restaurant with a big fireplace. Service also sets this property apart, because it's really, really great.
