Fodor's Expert Review High Line Hotel

180 10th Ave., at 20th St., , New York, New York 10011, USA See on Map Fodor's Choice

A late-19th-century, redbrick, Gothic-style building on the landscaped grounds of a former seminary was transformed into this lovely hotel, full of original architectural details like stained-glass windows and pine floors. Antique typewriters and a carefully chosen collection of books are particularly charming details. Guests are welcome to read the books--but should probably stay off the typewriters.

room

Vintage-inspired furniture and pretty rugs over hardwood floors decorate the rooms. Filled with natural light, all rooms offer great views, either over the High Line park or the hotel’s interior garden. Some even have lovely decorative fireplaces.

Dogs are welcome here, and the hotel even has dog sitters and dog walking services available.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located on 10th Avenue, this boutique hotel is set in the western edge of Chelsea, one block away from the Hudson River and its waterfront park (a beautiful spot for walking and jogging). The hotel is a sort walk from the High Line park and the galleries of Chelsea - but is a bit removed from the subway. The nearest trains are the C and E lines at 23rd Street. Taxis and Uber are available in the area.

Restaurants

A diverse range of food options is available at Chelsea Market (8-minute walk), an indoor market with tacos, sandwiches, gelato, and doughnuts. If you’re planning a picnic at the nearby High Line park, this is the place to go for picnic fare. For an elegant night out, make a reservation at Del Posto (6-minute walk), a destination Italian restaurant from acclaimed chef Mario Batali. Neighborhood favorite Cookshop (2-minute walk) is a bright, all-day eatery for a simple breakfast, leisurely brunch, or unfussy dinner.

Bars

Cocktails are served in a speakeasy-style space at Bathtub Gin (5-minute walk). A casual pub with a literary bent, the Half King (3-minute walk) has more than a dozen beers on draft and happy hour until 8pm, seven days a week.

WHY WE LIKE IT

This boutique hotel preserved the original character of the building and offers a glimpse into New York City history. We love the private interior garden, the quiet coffee bar, and the seasonal cocktail bar patio.
