3 Best Hotels in Taos, New Mexico

Background Illustration for Hotels

The hotels and motels along NM 68 (Paseo del Pueblo), most of them on the south side of town, suit every need and budget; rates vary little between big-name chains and smaller establishments—Hampton Inn is one of the best maintained of the chains. Make advance reservations and expect higher rates during ski season (usually from late December to early April, and especially for lodgings on the north side of town, closer to the ski area) and in the summer. The Taos Ski Valley has a number of condo and rental units, but there’s little reason to stay up here unless you’re in town expressly for skiing or perhaps hiking in summer—it’s too far from Taos proper to be a convenient base for exploring the rest of the area. The area's many B&Bs offer some of the best values, when you factor in typically hearty full breakfasts, personal service, and, often, roomy casitas with private entrances.

The Blake

$$$$ | 116 Sutton Pl., Taos, NM, 87525, USA

This luxury boutique hotel just steps from the resort's lifts has quickly developed a reputation as the swankiest accommodation in the Taos region. Of course, if you're not here to ski, hike, or pursue other valley activities, the hotel is a bit remote—a 30-minute drive from Taos Plaza—to serve as a base for exploring the area. But the setting is gorgeous, and the amenities, which include a first-rate spa and increased dining options, are excellent. The $60-million LEED-certified hotel with a classic but contemporary French-Swiss Alpine look and vibe contains 80 rooms and suites with earthy tones, plush linens, humidifiers, and—in the suites—gas fireplaces. The largest suites have well-stocked kitchenettes and sweeping mountain views. A fireplace warms the inviting lobby, and 192 at the Blake restaurant is a sleek, stylish spot for drinks or a bite to eat. There's also a year-round heated pool and hot tub.

Pros

  • Steps from the main lift
  • Sizable rooms and plenty of amenities
  • Beautiful views of the mountain

Cons

  • A 30-minute drive from Taos
  • Feeling of remoteness if you're not outdoorsy
  • Lobby is only modestly sized
