Huckleberry Patch Restaurant & Gift Shop has been the huckleberry headquarters of the state for more than 50 years, selling the purple wild berry native to the region. No less than three outdoor Saturday morning markets are held downtown in the summer. The oldest and biggest is the Missoula Farmers' Market, which boasts 100 local vendors selling an amazing array of flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, locally baked breads, and other handmade goods. It's held adjacent to the old train depot at the north end of Higgins Street every Saturday morning from mid-May to mid-October, as well as Tuesday evening from July through mid-September. The Missoula People's Market showcases more than 80 local artisans, featuring unique Montana arts and craft. Monte Dolack is something of a legend in western Montana and his nature-focused lithographs and watercolors, shown in galleries all over the world, have become iconic. Even if you're not in the buying mood, it's worth checking out his gallery on Front Street. It's open by appointment only, so phone ahead to set up a time.

Situated in a lovingly restored turn-of-the-20th-century building, Noice Studio and Gallery features ongoing exhibits of paintings, pastels, sculptures, fiber arts, and photography by Montana artists such as Rudy Autio, Russell Chatham, and Marshall Noice.

Old West Gallery and Antiques is a huge shop selling gifts, collectibles, Native American and Western art, and furniture. The kids are likely to be enamored of the Old West Candy Store inside, which features fudge and hand-dipped chocolates. The entire family will enjoy the player piano and other music machines.

Ostensibly a record store, with the largest collection of new and used vinyl in Montana, the original hipster department store is best known as a unique and eclectic gift shop that will keep you entertained for hours even if you forgot your wallet. Locals know it well, and every first-timer comes away gushing superlatives and swearing they'll be back. Great place for T-shirts, jewelry, cards, journals, and so on.

Voted best Flathead gift shop in 2023, this store sells homemade and organic lotions, soaps, massage products and perfumes inspired by Montana's natural legacy. There's also a store in Kalispell.

A nonprofit artist cooperative, Sandpiper Gallery shows the work of local and regional artists and holds workshops throughout the summer. Don't miss their annual art show on the county courthouse lawn the second Saturday in August.

Works by Montana authors, a fine selection of the best books from anywhere, and gifts are found at this literary outlet, a linchpin in Missoula for more than 25 years. Readings, signings, and other literary events are scheduled year-round at this comfortable shop, where you're likely to rub elbows with an author browsing the shelves.
