Within Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness, Appalachian Mountain Club's 100,000-plus acres encompass three historic sporting-camp retreats that make it easy for guests to recreate in the great outdoors; each has cabins and a woodsy main lodge with a fireplace, sitting area with games and books, and long tables where meals (included in rates) are served family-style. Cabins have wood stoves, and the locales have a bunkhouse (or two), sauna, and a bathhouse with hot showers. There are a few ADA-accessible cabins with private baths, at Gorman Chairback Lodge & Cabins and Medawisla Lodge & Cabins; one of the bunkhouses at the latter has its own shared bath. On the backcountry lands surrounding these retreats and Little Lyford Lodge & Cabins, the moose are abundant and the hiking, fly-fishing, canoeing, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, biking (mountain, gravel, and fat-tire), birding, and trail running are excellent. Naturalist programs are offered periodically in the summer. Come winter, about 90 miles of trails—part of AMC's free interconnected trail system—are groomed for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking.
