On the Diamond Head end of Waikiki and two blocks from Kuhio Beach, this 37-story high-rise is great for travelers who want to be near the action but not right in it. You enter through a lobby of rich wood detailing, contemporary fabrics, and magnificent floral displays. The lobby bar offers tropical cocktails, an Island-style pupu menu, happy hour specials, and live music; the M.A.C. 24/7 Waikiki restaurant serves modern comfort food (try the M.A.C. ginger ale made fresh at the bar). The 10th-floor outdoor pool has plenty of seating and some cabanas. If marriage is on your mind, a wedding gazebo anchors the hotel gardens, and there's penthouse reception space, too. Hilton Waikoloa Village

$$$$ | 69-425 Waikoloa Beach Dr., Waikoloa, HI, 96738, USA

Gondola trams glide by, pint-size guests zoom down the 175-foot waterslide, a bride poses on the grand staircase, a fire-bearing runner lights the torches along the seaside path at sunset—these are some typical scenes at this 62-acre megaresort. Shaded pathways lined with a multimillion-dollar Pacific Island art collection connect the three tall buildings, while Swiss-made trams and canal boats shuttle those who want to bypass the long hallways and meandering paths. Though there's no ocean beach, a seaside trail leads to Anaehoomalu Bay, one of the island's most beautiful tropical beaches. An ocean-side saltwater lagoon is great for families. Modern rooms in neutral tones have private lanai and are large enough to accommodate the families that flock here. The flagship restaurant, KPC (Kamuela Provision Company), presents incomparable coastline views. Although some may find the resort a fantasy version of Hawaii, others love it for its one-stop-shop approach to a Hawaii holiday.

Pros

  • Lots of restaurant and activity options, including two golf courses
  • Close to retail shopping

Cons

  • Gigantic and crowded

The Historic Magnolia House

$$$ | 442 Gorrell St., Greensboro, NC, 27435, USA

One of the last remaining Green Book–recommended establishments in the area, Magnolia House is a piece of history you can sleep and eat in. The Green Book was a publication in the mid-20th-century for Black travelers about welcoming places to stay and dine during Jim Crow law restrictions, and Magnolia House hosted such luminaries as Tina Turner and Ray Charles. The thoughtfully restored inn has touches of modern design in its four themed rooms: Baldwin, inspired by intellectuals like James Baldwin; the masculine Legends, for sports heroes like Jackie Robinson; Carlotta, a pink room dedicated to icons like Lena Horne; and Kind of Blue to celebrate Miles Davis. The restaurant serves soul food favorites like fish and grits and smothered pork chops, a decadent brunch, as well as live music.

Pros

  • Storied history and lineage
  • Beautifully restored themed rooms
  • Lavish weekend brunch

The Historic Plains Hotel

$ | 1600 Central Ave., Cheyenne, WY, 82001, USA

With its stunning lobby, this downtown landmark was built to be the height of elegance in 1911 and still oozes historic character even though it's no longer a top choice for people seeking a modern, trendy atmosphere. In its day, the hotel hosted several presidents (and presidents to be); since then, it's been worn a bit by the years. See if you can get a tour of Room 444, where long ago a young bride named Rosie killed her new husband and the prostitute he'd just met, before turning the gun on herself (you can still see the bullet holes in the window). Legend has it, you can also sometimes still spot Rosie roaming the halls.

Pros

  • Great downtown location
  • Tons of Old West charm
  • Good value

Cons

  • Dedicated parking is two blocks away (though there is closer street parking)
  • Small elevators (so cowboys wouldn't bring their horses up)

Historic Taos Inn

$$$ | 125 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, Taos, NM, 87571, USA

Located just north of Taos Plaza, this celebrated property is a local landmark, with its Spanish-colonial architecture, including decorative alcoves in rooms, lending a warm, distinctive aesthetic to the four buildings, including the upscale Helen's House, which contains some of the fanciest rooms. Older units have thick adobe walls, viga ceilings, and other elements typical of the regional architecture. In summer there's dining alfresco on the patio. The lobby, which also serves as seating for the Adobe Bar, is built around a former town well. Many shops and eateries are within walking distance, and the adjoining restaurant, Doc Martin's, is a nice dinner spot.

Pros

  • Legendary bar and excellent restaurant

Holiday Inn & Suites Chicago-Downtown

$$ | 506 W. Harrison St., Chicago, IL, 60607, USA

Not only is this Holiday Inn close to Chicago's main attractions, it's also within steps of CTA trains that go directly to either O'Hare or Midway airports. Decor-wise the rooms are a bit bland, but they’re comfortable and equipped with pillow-top mattresses, workspaces, and free Wi-Fi. That’s good news for the hordes of business travelers who are drawn here by the hotel’s proximity to the financial district; in summer months they and everyone else have an added incentive to visit—the rooftop pool.

Pros

  • Staff goes out of their way to be helpful
  • Convenient on-site washing machines and dryers
  • Great for budget-conscious families

Cons

  • The lobby can get quite crowded
  • Bathrooms are on the small side
  • No spa
