Heywood Hotel

$$ | 1609 E. Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX, 78702, USA

This boutique hotel debuted amidst the rapidly gentrifying strip of East Cesar Chavez, and the neighborhood has continued to flourish around the restored 1920s bungalow, elevating its desirable indie locale. The exterior, with a front porch and hanging basket chairs, is quaintly retro, and interiors are sleek and sophisticated, with mid-century modern style and historic accents, like original long-leaf pine floors. Seven rooms, each slightly different, are split between the original bungalow and the second floor of an adjacent building, accessed by a communal courtyard. Popular shops and restaurants and the hive of East Sixth bars are within walking distance. You can also explore with complimentary bicycles. Full-property group rentals are available.

  • Chic but approachable design
  • Luxury amenities and excellent attention to detail by the staff

The Higgins Hotel & Conference Center

$$$ | 1000 Magazine St., New Orleans, LA, 70130, USA

Unique in its position as a hotel owned and operated by a museum (in partnership with Hilton), the Higgins is both an extension of the WWII Museum and a convenient, modern stay full of Art Deco touches and museum-quality photographs and art. Overall, there’s a 1940s theme that’s focused on the war, but with more positive tones than you might find at the museum across the street. Take Rosie’s On The Roof, for example: named after Rosie the Riveter, the gorgeous rooftop bar and terrace serving small bites and classic cocktails is an homage to the working women of America’s WWII homefront.

Pros

  • Unique concept
  • Modern amenities and custom decor
  • Great bar and restaurant outlets

Cons

  • WWII theme isn't for everyone
  • Area outside gets easily congested
  • Long walk to French Quarter

High Peaks Resort

$$$$ | 2384 Saranac Ave., Lake Placid, NY, 12946, USA

The 7-acre waterfront property that once was the Hilton has now become the newly renovated High Peaks. The property has accommodations in two buildings, one on Main Street in the center of town and another on the water. The breakfast plan, which includes a morning nosh at the Dancing Bears, costs extra. Rooms throughout the updated property are attractive, with tasteful wooden furniture and furnishings. The Highlands

$ | 14000 Woodland Dr., Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA

Two hoteliers with an eye for low-budget panache teamed up to rejuvenate the decades-old cabins at this redwood-studded hillside (TV-free) adult property near downtown and the main Russian River beach. One of the proprietors, Crista Luedtke, also operates the nearby Boon Hotel + Spa and Boon Eat + Drink restaurants. Retro touches like burlwood coffee tables, redwood paneling, Formica tables, and floral curtains evoke Guerneville's mid-century casual-resort era, while the LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere recalls the area's 1970s and 1980s heyday. Two accommodations are small (but good for solo travelers), and pets are only permitted in three rooms. The room rate includes a continental breakfast.

Hilton Chicago

$$ | 720 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL, 60605, USA

On a busy day the lobby of this Hilton might be mistaken for a terminal at O'Hare Airport; it's a bustling convention hotel, but one that retains its distinguished 1920s heritage in a Renaissance-inspired entrance hall and gold-and-gilt grand ballroom. Renovations completed in 2012 provided new dining and drinking options (the venerable Kitty O'Sheas bar remains), while renovations completed in 2015 lend a more modern look to 1,000-plus guest rooms. A grab-and-go market offers Starbucks coffee, pastries, and sandwiches during daylight hours and local craft beers and cocktails in the evening. The 28,000-square-foot gym has enough room for an indoor track and swimming pool.
