Fodor's Expert Review Downtown Gulfport
It's hard to believe that the low-key yet vibrant artist enclave of Gulfport was once a blighted fishing village. Now, it's a colorful waterfront community and popular with the LGBT community. It's pretty much in between St. Pete Beach and St. Petersburg proper, and the area's main thoroughfare, Beach Boulevard, is home to a large number of locally owned boutiques, galleries, and eclectic eateries. Highlights include Hula Hula, a shop dealing in vintage tropical attire and decor, and Domain, where you can find items—Floridiana or otherwise—you'll find nowhere else, given that much of it was forged at the hands of local artisans. An Art Walk occurs every first Friday and third Saturday of the month, and there's a farmers' market every Tuesday. Keep an eye out for cool local events, as there are many here.
