39 Best Hotels in The Lower Gulf Coast, Florida

Background Illustration for Hotels

Lodging in Fort Myers, the islands, and Naples can be pricey, but there are affordable options even during the busy winter season. If these destinations are too rich for your pocket, consider visiting in the off-season, when rates drop drastically, or look to Fort Myers Beach and Cape Coral for better rates. Beachfront properties tend to be more expensive; to spend less, look for properties away from the water. In high season—Christmastime and Presidents' Day through Easter—always reserve ahead for the top properties. Fall is the slowest season: rates are low and availability is high, but this is also hurricane season (June–November).

Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa

$$$ | 17260 Harbour Pointe Dr., Fort Myers, FL, 33908, USA Fodor's Choice

Both vacationing families and businesspeople who want luxury pick this sprawling resort complex, which towers over the island-studded San Carlos Bay at the last mainland exit before the Sanibel Causeway. Ritz-Carlton, Naples

$$$$ | 280 Vanderbilt Beach Rd., Naples, FL, 34108, USA Fodor's Choice
Ritz-Carlton, Naples, Naples
Mark Wieland

This regal Ritz-Carlton, with marble statues and antique furnishings blended with artistic modernity in the rooms and public spaces, recently completed an extensive renovation and expansion that began in 2021. The reconfigured legendary resort debuted its Vanderbilt Tower, which includes a new Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge, about 70 club-level guest rooms, a reimagined resort lobby, and three new dining experiences. All of the resort’s guest rooms also received a face-lift during the work, and the resort’s outdoor spaces were reconfigured, with new pools, bungalows, and cabanas. A short stroll from the stately lobby is a beautiful white-sand beach dense with seashells to match the hotel's ocean-elegance style. Given the graciousness of the staff, you quickly get over the incongruity of traipsing through the formal lobby in flip-flops, clutching a plastic bag of beach finds. In the rooms, the comforts of home prevail—assuming your home is plush and stocked with your favorite wine (yes, repeat guests don't even have to ask: what you consumed last time is well noted). The posh spa is one of the Ritz-Carlton brand's first and largest, offering a complete (and divine) menu of indulgences including its signature lemongrass basil scent.

Pros

  • Renovated guest rooms
  • Near north Naples shopping and restaurants
  • Ultraindulgent spa

Cons

  • Hike to downtown
  • Valet parking only
  • Extra charge for beach umbrellas annoying at this nice a place

Lighthouse Resort Inn & Suites

$$$ | 1051 5th Ave., Fort Myers Beach, FL, 33931, USA

An ideal base for exploring, this complex of pastel-painted buildings at the foot of the Fort Myers bridge has rooms that are basic but spacious, so consider splurging a little for a one- or two-bedroom suite. There are two pools (one with a waterfall) and a popular tiki bar that's open until 2 am, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Because of its affordability, this hotel is popular with the college crowd at spring break; at other times, it draws families and couples. Old salts and regulars frequent the tiki bar for downright cheap lunch deals.

Pros

  • Convenient location
  • On-site laundry
  • Views of the area from balconies

Cons

  • Can be noisy
  • May have to park across the street if under-building parking is full
  • Some complaints about level of cleanliness
