Interesting fact: the restaurant's "loo" was voted "best of" for local restaurants. The veranda is ideal for winter dining, but indoors the seating is tighter.

Knife & Spoon

$$$$ | South Orlando

This elegant-but-casual, Michelin-starred eatery is helmed by two-time Top Chef contestant John Tesar (you know, the mean one) and focuses on turf (prime, house-aged steaks) and surf (raw bar, local seafood). Interesting dishes include sushi-grade tuna and torched foie gras or 45-day, dry-aged, 32-ounce, bone-in rib eye (at $130). Here you can order Norwegian treats such as kringla, a pretzel-shaped pastry with toppings; lefse, a soft flatbread with cinnamon, sugar, and butter; or a troll horn, a puff pastry filled with orange-marmalade cream. Wash it all down with a Nordic draft beer or a Viking coffee—hot or Elsa style (aka frozen).

Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery

$ | Animal Kingdom

On your way to Kilimanjaro Safaris in the morning, stop by this coffee shop to grab a colossal cinnamon roll or pistachio honey croissant to split while waiting in line. In the afternoon, the flatbreads are a refreshing choice to share.

Kush

$$

At this cozy burger joint on the edge of Wynwood, locally sourced ingredients and stellar craft beer star on a Florida-inspired menu. Order a Frita burger topped with Gruyère and guava jelly or a Key West conch salad while you sip one of 18 brews. Since the place is so small, you might have to wait, but that's not a problem thanks to a neon-lit speakeasy bar next door that celebrates the neighborhood's grungy, artistic vibe.

La Hacienda de San Angel

Open only for dinner, this restaurant combines authentic Mexican entrées with a perfect location to view the fireworks. The alambre de res (flank steak with bacon in poblano and bell peppers) is delicious, while the chiles rellenos is an excellent vegetarian dish. La Segunda Central Bakery

For more than a century, this family-owned Ybor City bakery has been a go-to stop for authentic Cuban bread—crispy on the outside, and soft and chewy on the inside. It's also the largest producer of Cuban bread in the world, each day baking 18,000 loaves for restaurants in Tampa and beyond. In addition to bread, the eatery also offers a number of other baked goods, including guava turnovers, flan and cannolis, as well as a full café menu with breakfast items, sandwiches (on house-made bread, of course) and salads. La Segunda also has locations in South Tampa and St. Petersburg.

The Land Cart

Lighter fare includes a plant-based Canadian tart or wild caught scallops. If you're itching to try yet another Canadian specialty, order one of the poutine dishes as a side. The Le Tub Saloon

$$

Despite molasses-slow service and an abundance of insects at sundown, this eatery is beloved by locals, and management seemed genuinely appalled when hordes of trend-seeking city slickers started jamming bar stools and tables after GQ and Oprah declared its thick, juicy Angus burgers the best around. Once a Sunoco gas station, this quirky waterside saloon has an enduring affection for claw-foot bathtubs; lunch will run you around $18 (burger $13.50; small fries $5).

Leaky Cauldron

$$ | Universal Studios

British pub staples are fitting fare for Diagon Alley's signature restaurant. The drinks menu complements hearty meals like stews and cottage pies with kooky-sounding beverages from the Harry Potter books like Tongue-Tying Lemon Squash, Otter's Fizzy Orange Juice, and Fishy Green Ale. Order at the counter, then be seated; a microchip in your "candlestick" will tell servers where to bring the grub. The Ploughman's Platter, with its cheeses, Scotch eggs, and apple-beet salad is food enough for two average eaters. English sausages can be had in toad-in-the-hole, bangers and mash, or a sandwich with three-mustard mayo. The fish-and-chips has an excellent flaky crust; the cod is flown in daily. End with the indulgent sticky toffee pudding. There are iconic treasures throughout the Cauldron, from the replica movie art on the walls to the actual leaking sign.

The Lemon Tree

$

If Italy had old-school luncheonettes, this is what they'd look like: a storefront of yellow walls, dark-green booths, white linoleum tables, and cascading sconces of faux ivy leaves and hand-painted Tuscan serving pieces for artwork. It's self-described by the husband-and-wife owners (who are always at the front) as an "upscale diner," and locals swear by it for breakfast (served all day) and lunch. Expect a short wait any day in season at peak hours. There's always a treat on the house, like a glass of sorbet to finish lunch; and don't miss the shrimp scampi—the sauce is so good, you'll want to dip every bit of the fresh focaccia in it.

Each of the six dining rooms commemorates a historical U.S. figure (e.g., Betsy Ross or Benjamin Franklin), and both lunch and dinner feature the family-style, "all you care to enjoy" Patriot's Platter, with turkey, pot roast, sliced pork, and sides. A protein-based alternative is always available as well. The restaurant is decorated in lovely Williamsburg colors with Early American–style furnishings and lots of brightly polished brass. Wait times may be long, but don't let the always-crowded lobby put you off—the food is surprisingly good.

Linda's La Cantina

$$$ | Downtown Orlando

A local favorite since 1947, this down-home steak house serves good cuts of meat, expertly cooked and reasonably priced. Butchery is done on premises, and there are no TVs over the bar to distract from a pleasant conversation over a great steak. The menu is short and to the point, including about a dozen steaks (most of them different sizes of top sirloin strip, filet mignon, or T-bone) and just enough ancillary items to fill a single page. Among the fish selections is the 12-ounce blackened red snapper. The chicken, veal, or eggplant parmigiana topped with marinara sauce and mozzarella is good for nonsteak lovers. With every entrée you receive a salad plus a choice of spaghetti (which isn't particularly noteworthy), baked potato, steak fries, green beans, or broccoli. There's even an old-fashioned early bird special for seniors before 6 pm.
