The Ben West Palm

$$$ | 251 N. Narcissus Ave., FL, 33401, USA Fodor's Choice

The glossy, handsome hotel which sits across the Intracoastal Waterway and is a block from Clematis Street radiates swagger, and, this being an Autograph Collection hotel, has numerous posh perks. Named in honor of Byrd and Fred Dewey’s original Palm Beach County estate named Ben Trovato, the hotel blends vintage good looks with contemporary comforts; its lobby is outfitted in oriental rugs, wicker swing chairs, leather-tufted sofas, and soaring bookcases. Amenities include a 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness center, custom-designed bicycles for guests, morning yoga, pet-friendly policies, and a rooftop pool with private cabanas and an outdoor firepit. There's even a "Book Butler Program," a curated in-room menu of exciting reads honoring the hotel’s muse, Byrd Dewey. The roof boasts the first and only rooftop waterfront drinking and dining outlet in downtown West Palm Beach. The dapperness extends to the rooms, with headboards swathed in toffee-color leather, Turkish linens, 55" smart TVs, Nespresso coffeemakers, and La Bottega bath products. Suites feature balconies and soaking tubs or glass showers overlooking the Palm Harbor Marina. Both dining outlets---Proper Grit, on the ground floor and Spruzzo, on the rooftop---are uniformly excellent, though they tend to get crowded on the weekends.

  • Excellent location and design
  • Top-notch dining
  • The only rooftop waterfront drinking and dining outlet in downtown West Palm Beach

Cons

  • Rooftop pool can get crowded
  • Rooms on lower floors lack views
  • Pricey parking fee

Casa Grandview West Palm Beach

$$ | 1410 Georgia Ave., FL, 33401, USA

In West Palm's charming Grandview Heights historic district—and just minutes away from both downtown and the beach—this warm and personalized B&B offers a wonderful respite from South Florida's big-hotel norm. With 17 eclectic units spread over a city block, Casa Grandview's principal "inn," cottages, and suites exemplify Florida architecture through the decades circa 1919–49 but come equipped with plenty of modern-day amenities, too. Each unit or room has its own name, personality, furnishings, and history. Grantham's Library Suite, for example, is in the former kitchen of the 1925 Spanish Mediterranean home and adjacent to the extensive house library. With the likes of Florida Craftsman cottages, 1948 art deco cabana-bungalows, and the principal inn—a conjoined 1919 Spanish-mission home and 1925 Mediterranean-revival home refitted with modern amenities—Casa Grandview keeps Florida's fledgling history in style.

Pros

  • Daily dry-cleaning of all linens
  • Complimentary soft drinks, coffee, and snacks (and lots of them) in lobby
  • Simple keyless entry (number code lock system)

Cons

  • Cottages and suites have seven-day minimum
  • Free breakfast in B&B rooms only
  • Art deco suites don't have air-conditioning

Hampton Inn & Suites Wellington

$$ | 2155 Wellington Green Dr., FL, 33414, USA

The only hotel near the polo fields in the equestrian mecca of Wellington—10 miles west of downtown Palm Beach—feels a bit like a tony clubhouse, with rich wood paneling, hunt prints, and elegant chandeliers; but inside the rooms are standard Hampton Inn fare. Recently spruced up with new carpeting, the one-bedroom apartment-style suites have sleeper sofas, refrigerators, and microwaves. Some rooms have a lake view. If equestrian pursuits are your thing, this is the place to be. Plus, it's close to some of the more off-the-beaten-path tourist attractions, including kid-favorite Lion Country Safari.
