Fodor's Expert Review Aspen Art Museum

Aspen Museum/Gallery

Opened in 2014, the $72 million Aspen Art Museum turned heads with its giant, crate-like design and firmly established the museum as a must-visit for contemporary art (and architecture) lovers. Designed by Shigeru Ban, the 33,000-square-foot facility is a three-story glass cube encased in a woven, wood-veneer exterior screen that allows glimpses of the museum's exhibitions to passersby. Inside, a glass elevator and ceilings with an open-plane design create a bright space and the rooftop sculpture garden offers prime views of Aspen Mountain. The Aspen Art Museum is a non-collecting museum so the majority of the works exhibited here are new pieces from top national and international artists, often commisioned by the museum. An endowment keeps admission free.
