Hillcrest
The large, retro Hillcrest sign over the intersection of University and 5th Avenues makes an excellent landmark at the epicenter of this vibrant section of Uptown. Strolling along University Avenue between 4th and 6th Avenues and from Washington Street to Robinson Avenue will reveal a mixture of retail shops and restaurants. National chains such as Starbucks and Freshii coexist with local boutiques, bookstores, bars, and coffee shops. A few blocks east, another interesting stretch of stores and restaurants runs along University Avenue to Normal Street. Long established as the center of San Diego’s gay community, the neighborhood bustles both day and night with a mixed crowd of shoppers, diners, and partygoers. If you are visiting Hillcrest on Sunday between 9 and 2, be sure to explore the exceptional Hillcrest Farmers Market.
