This spot near Joshua Tree National Park values simplicity and being close to nature over luxury. The grounds are gorgeous and being this close to nature is a different kind of luxury all its own. With cool art and funky galleries nearby, plus a museum directly across the street, the 29 Palms Inn is desert cool, nestled among a neighborhood of low slug mid-century ranches. Hand-painted signs give a homey, hippie vibe.
YOU SHOULD KNOW There are several family-friendly amenities here, including a library of games and books, guided nature walks along the 70-acre property, and incredible bird watching opportunities at the Oasis of Mara.
The rooms are individual buildings, includes adobe bungalows from the 1930s and wood-framed cabins—some dating back to the 1920s. Each unit varies in size with cute names to match the individual personalities. All units have air conditioning as well as patios or porches, plus space to hang with your travel companions.
Bathrooms are unique to each bungalow or cabin, but all include showers, toilets, and sinks.
The office building, surrounded by giant palm trees, cactus, and agave, is adjacent to the restaurant and bar and also hosts the lending library.
The heated outdoor pool is open all year and is also ADA accessible.
Outdoor yoga on the grass lawn is offered on weekends (weather permitting).
A continental breakfast is included. Guests can place orders for picnic lunches to take as they explore the nearby oasis, national parks, and monuments. The Restaurant at the 29 Palms Inn is adjacent to the pool and open for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. Live entertainment is provided nightly.
It’s a little more than an hour to get to Twentynine Palms from Palm Springs. Once on the property, you’ll be able to easily walk from the casitas to the main building, restaurant, and pool. The main road through Joshua Tree National Park is paved, so a standard rental car will do the job unless you aim to go camping or journey along deeper hiking trails.

For off-site dining, try the delicious salads and burgers at Kitchen in the Desert (3-minute drive), find Mediterranean options at Palm Kabob House (4-minute drive), or enjoy a date night at Bistro Twentynine (3-minute drive).
Shelly’s Lounge (3-minute drive), inside Tortoise Rock Casino, features a ladies night on with karaoke on Wednesdays. For a relaxing night in a sports bar atmosphere, play some shuffleboard at Downtown Josh (2-minute drive).
WHY WE LIKE IT
This funky, family-owned spot has been hosting travelers for five generations. The individual cottages offer privacy, while plenty of the property amenities give opportunities for community building and group fun. There’s a small downtown-like strip running along Highway 62, which includes indie restaurants and a town visitor’s center. It’s definitely a unique—and charming!—experience.
