Fodor's Expert Review Castello di Amorosa

Calistoga Winery/Brewery/Distillery

An astounding medieval structure complete with drawbridge and moat, chapel, stables, and secret passageways, the Castello commands Diamond Mountain's lower eastern slope. Some of the 107 rooms contain replicas of 13th-century frescoes (cheekily signed, "[the-artist's-name].com"), and the dungeon has an iron maiden from Nuremberg, Germany. You must pay for a tour to see most of Dario Sattui's extensive eight-level property, though with a basic tasting you'll have access to part of the complex. Bottlings of note include several Italian-style wines, including La Castellana, a robust "super Tuscan" blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Merlot; and Il Barone, a deliberately big Cab made largely from Rutherford grapes. The two-hour Royal Food & Wine Pairing Tour by sommelier Mary Davidek ($85, by appointment only) is among the Wine Country's best.
