Ideal for travelers seeking design pizzazz, a see-and-be-seen atmosphere, and first-class amenities, this five-story downtown Napa property fuses New York City chic and Las Vegas glamour. Ultracontemporary rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers, wine refrigerators, and appropriate (and appropriately located) electronics docking stations come in several categories, from 285-square-foot Classic Kings to 780-square-foot Archer's Den suites with balconies and fireplaces. All rooms have beds draped in 100%-cotton linens and topped with down duvets and down pillows. There are also work desks, safes, and flat-screen TVs with premium channels. Small refrigerators are stocked with refreshments; there's a fee for them, but it's reasonable. The look overall is clean and sophisticated, with local art adorning the rooms and the hallways. Harmon Guest House

$$$ | 227 Healdsburg Ave., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA Fodor's Choice

A boutique sibling of the H2Hotel two doors away, this downtown delight that debuted in 2018 earned instant LEED Gold status for its eco-friendly construction and operating practices. Totally 21st century in its use of concrete, steel, glass, and (often reclaimed) wood, the Harmon Guest House, named for Healdsburg’s founder, Harmon Heald, echoes mid-century modern design with clean lines and cool sophistication. In the guest rooms, simple wood platform beds sit on light-oak floors, with headboardlike, dark, quilted panels attached to the white walls providing a contrast. Rooms all have window seats with views of local landmark Fitch Mountain, Foss Creek (whose restoration the hotel has participated in), or a bamboo-filled interior courtyard. The public areas include a creek-side deck. The room rate includes a continental breakfast.

  • Rooftop bar's cocktails, food menu, and views
  • Novel room design
  • Connecting rooms and suites

Cons

The Knoll Hotel Napa Valley, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

$$ | 320 Soscol Ave., CA, 94559, USA Fodor's Choice

Bright and spotless with a staff trained to please, this four-story property provides value with a splash of boutique style in its public areas. A double-sided fireplace catches the eye in the lobby, whose bar has views of the large outdoor patio. Morning light streams into the nearby breakfast room, where (for a fee) guests dine on dishes that include omelets, avocado toast, and pancakes. There's no lunch, but you can order a light dinner from the bar. The nondescript hallways give this corporate hotel's game away, but design touches like bathroom barn doors, leather headboards with decorative straps, and nightstands with faux-marble tops lend the guest rooms, done in shades of beige and brown, a modicum of flair. At the southern end of Napa's auto row on a busy four-lane road, the Knoll Hotel lacks Wine Country glamour but delivers a more than satisfactory experience.

Pros

  • Excellent for the price
  • Fitness center and hot tub
  • Well-designed bathrooms (most with showers)

Cons

  • On a busy road a mile from downtown (though no noise issues)
  • Short on Wine Country charm
  • No pool

$$$$ | 29 E. MacArthur St., Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA Fodor's Choice

Guests at this 7-acre boutique property five blocks south of Sonoma Plaza bask in ritzy seclusion in plush accommodations set amid landscaped gardens. Rancho Caymus Inn

$$$ | 1140 Rutherford Rd., Rutherford, CA, 94573, USA Fodor's Choice

A romantic hacienda-away-from-home that off-season may be the Napa Valley's best value in its price range, this upscale-contemporary boutique hotel near Inglenook and the Rutherford Grill contains rooms whose decor and artworks evoke the area's Mexican heritage. The large guest rooms—most split-level, all with patios, and some with vaulted exposed-beam ceilings—have textured-plaster walls, brown leather furniture, and contemporary variations on stovepipe fireplaces. Hanging plants, ceramic-tile friezes, a mass of wrought iron, and a series of graceful arches contribute to the movie-set glamour of the brick-lined courtyard that contains the rectangular wading pool and adjacent hot tub. The pool isn't huge, but it'll cool you off on a hot summer day, and the courtyard is a peaceful retreat.

Pros

  • Courtyard pool area
  • Smallest rooms are 400 square feet, with several 600 or more
  • Well-trained staff

Cons

  • All rooms have only showers (albeit nice ones)

An 1883 Italianate Victorian anchors this luxury inn on 3 lush acres in a residential setting a mile from Healdsburg Plaza. The main house and an adjacent structure contain three guest rooms each, two duplexes hold four more, and there's a standalone ADA suite near the well-stocked koi pond. The furnishings tilt modern, with hardwood floors, contemporary carpets, king or queen beds depending on room size, and outdoor sitting areas, all but one private. Some rooms have fireplaces and tubs. Toward the property's rear, guests work on their putting at an 18-hole green and have access to bocce and pickleball courts. Closer to the mansion, an oak strung with lanterns looms over the pool and hot tub. Redwoods tower over this secluded, romantic boutique resort convenient to Guerneville restaurants, Sonoma Coast and Russian River wineries, and Armstrong Woods and other outdoorsy attractions. Wydown Hotel

$$$ | 1424 Main St., St. Helena, CA, 94574, USA Fodor's Choice

This smart boutique hotel near downtown shopping and dining delivers comfort with a heavy dose of style: the storefront lobby's high ceiling and earth tones, punctuated by rich-hued splashes of color, hint at the relaxed grandeur owner-hotelier Mark Hoffmeister and his design team achieved in the rooms upstairs. In an older building retrofitted to suit 21st-century tastes, the hotel has rooms furnished with plush king beds and contemporary art; bathrooms, stocked with deluxe bath products, have tile floors and marble counters. Other perks include Nespresso coffeemakers, complimentary sodas, flat-screen TVs, and quality sound systems in guest rooms, plus free on-site parking and passes to the gym at a local spa. The three largest rooms occupy corners; those facing Main Street pick up some street noise, so if that's an issue, ask for an atrium room—they're smaller, but quieter and almost cocoonlike.

Pros

Redwoods, Douglas firs, and palms supply shade and seclusion at this lushly landscaped resort ¾ mile north of downtown Guerneville. Guest rooms in this remodeled 1843 building skew contemporary with their furnishings, but the expressive wallpaper hints at days past. Flamingo Resort

$$ | 2777 4th St., Santa Rosa, CA, 95405, USA

If Don Draper from Mad Men popped into this 1950s motel-hotel hybrid 2¼ miles northeast of downtown Santa Rosa, he'd feel right at home. Guest rooms, all with refrigerators and coffeemakers, retain their high ceilings and that old-school flair. They're spread out in several fieldstone-clad buildings connected by glass-enclosed walkways encircling the Olympic-size outdoor pool. The suites and premium rooms, some with poolside patios, are spacious, and all the rooms have retro decor touches. From certain angles, the Flamingo exudes mid-century style, but although it has a large central pool, a spa, and a fitness center, the place feels more motor lodge than resort. One plus is the poolside Lazeaway Club restaurant and bar, with tropical-themed drinks and a party atmosphere. Sunday poolside brunch is a treat.

Although this inn sits just off Highway 29, its patrons remain mostly above the fray, strolling 8 acres of gardens, enjoying views of the vineyards adjoining the property, and drifting to sleep in beds adorned with fancy linens and down pillows. Guest rooms are in several two-story Tudor-style shake-shingled structures; Vineyard View suites are almost twice as big as Harvest Views suites and come with a pull-out sofa. Worth the extra cost are the accommodations in the property's rear, with outdoor hot tubs nearly within reach of vines farmed by nearby Whitehall Lane Winery. Hôtel Les Mars

$$$$ | 27 North St., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA

This Relais & Châteaux property takes the prize for opulence with guest rooms, spacious and elegant enough for French nobility, furnished with 18th- and 19th-century antiques and reproductions, canopy beds dressed in luxe linens, and gas-burning fireplaces. Most of the white-marble bathrooms have spa tubs in addition to enormous showers. The 20-foot exposed-beam ceilings of third-floor Grand King rooms contribute to their palatial air; second-floor rooms have a slightly more understated style. The hotel, which has a restaurant and bar and a wood-paneled library off the lobby, has the feel of a sumptuous Left Bank mansion.

Pros

  • Large rooms
  • Luxurious feel
  • Just off Healdsburg's plaza

Cons

  • Expensive most of the year
  • Minimum-stay requirement on weekends
  • No pool or spa

Hotel Petaluma, Tapestry by Hilton

$ | 205 Kentucky St., Petaluma, CA, 94952, USA

Reasonable rates and vintage allure make this 1923 art deco property worth considering for budget travelers, especially those without a car (parking’s a pain) seeking a downtown location and a touch of style. The high-ceilinged, tile-floor lobby, decked out with contemporary sofas and chairs, has boutique-hotel appeal, but the rooms, furnished with less flair, are on the small side. The ground-floor Costeaux Bakery and The Shuckery seafood restaurant are excellent.

Pros

  • Downtown location
  • Some rooms have city and river views
  • Excellent Costeaux Bakery and The Shuckery seafood restaurant

Cons

  • Public spaces grander than the mostly small rooms
  • Hallway sound carries into rooms
  • Lacks parking lot (and on-street parking is difficult), fitness center, and other amenities

The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection

$$$$ | 1325 Broadway, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

Handsome public areas and a destination restaurant by celebrity chef Michael Mina are among the selling points of this 10-acre, two-story, Mission Revival–style resort. A mural behind the front desk and the lobby's salon-style assemblage of paintings, drawings, photos, and ceramic plates highlight Sonoma's history. Mina's Wit & Wisdom Tavern is the fine-dining option, and there's a smaller café for breakfast and lunch. The fitness center's off to one side; the full spa at the back of the landscaped property contains a large outdoor relaxation area. Most rooms measure just under 400 square feet, with several junior suites slightly larger. Done in muted tones, all the accommodations have pillow-top mattresses, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and small refrigerators. Most have private outdoor seating areas, some with tubs.

Pros

  • Landscaped grounds with many native trees and plants
  • Michael Mina's Wit & Wisdom Tavern
  • Spa with large outdoor relaxation area

Cons

  • Not all rooms have tubs or fireplaces
  • Resort fee includes amenities all patrons might not require
  • Staff's lack of cordiality an issue for some guests

Mount View Hotel & Spa

$$ | 1457 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

Although it occupies a 1919 building designated a National Historic Landmark, the Mount View skews modern, with a cheery lobby and a boutique, slightly continental feel. Three cottages have private redwood decks and whirlpool tubs; these and the second-floor suites and junior suites, which have separate sitting areas, are more spacious than the other guest rooms. All the accommodations have flat-screen TVs, small refrigerators, safes, and Illy espresso makers. Complimentary coffee and breads are delivered to rooms each morning. The full-service True Spa and Johnny's comfort-food restaurant and sports bar operate on the first floor, and there’s a heated pool with a geothermal hot tub out back. Adjacent to the hotel in an open-air space, Robert’s Tropical Table serves Jamaican-inspired cuisine year-round, and the Moonshine outdoor theater screens classic and neoclassic Hollywood films on summer and fall weekends. If you’re looking for ways to occupy your time, Calistoga’s official visitor center is off the lobby.

Pros

  • Full-service spa, pool, geothermal hot tub
  • Spacious cottages and second-floor suites
  • Johnny’s restaurant and sports bar for comfort food

Cons

  • Hotel shows its age in spots
