Named for its address on Malvern Avenue, this eatery is popular with the locals, so get here early. For a light meal, there are some inventive sandwiches, like the Bombay Turkey Salad with ginger cream cheese on raisin bread, a range of salads, or the famous tomato soup. Entrées are strong on comfort food (old-fashioned meat loaf, chicken potpie, and the like) alongside creations like cilantro-crusted catfish with house jalapeno tartar sauce. Be sure to save room for dessert. You can pick up box lunches and food to go, too.

Bill Clinton loved this old-fashioned barbecue spot as a teenager, and with good reason. Owned by the same family for five generations, McClard's is the place to use up a wad of napkins eating hickory-smoked pork ribs dripping in a slightly spicy, tomato-based, vinegary sauce—that is, after you dig them out from under a mound of hand-cut french fries. Seating here is limited, but the wait is worth it. Use your time to look around at what other guests are eating. Chances are, you'll see a Tamale Spread: a bed of tamales topped with Fritos, chopped beef, chili beans, cheese, and onions, with a generous splash of barbecue sauce on top and served with Saltines, Arkansas style. Locals rave about the barbecued chicken, available only on Wednesday.
