Croix sur la Montagne

Fodor's Choice

Visible from up to 50 miles away on a clear day, the 98-foot-high steel cross at the top of Mont-Royal has been a city landmark since it was erected in 1924, largely with money raised through the efforts of 85,000 high-school students. Once upon a time, it took four hours and the labor of three to replace the 249 electric bulbs used to light the cross; today, the iconic cross is illuminated via a high-tech remote-control LED system.

Québec–Lévis Ferry

Lower Town Fodor's Choice

Crossing the St. Lawrence River on this ferry will reward you with a striking view of the Québec City skyline, with the Château Frontenac and the Québec Seminary high atop the cliff. The view is even more impressive at night. Ferries generally run every 20 or 30 minutes from 6 am until 6 pm, and then every hour until 2:20 am; there are additional ferries from April through November.

L'Église de Rivière-au-Tonnerre

Knife-carved arches, columns, and other decorative elements mark the impressive wooden church built between 1908 and 1912 by more than 300 volunteers, motivated by their feeling that the community needed a sanctuary. This church follows the cruciform plan of Norman style. The nave is just over 26 feet tall, and 60 hand-carved sculptures decorate the structure.

Village du Père Noël

Santa is not just for Christmas here. In his summer residence kids can sit on his knee and speak to him in French or English, then have fun in the grounds, which contain bumper boats; a petting zoo with goats, sheep, horses, and colorful birds; games; and a large outdoor pool in the summer. There is a snack bar, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own food (there are numerous picnic tables). During the cold winter months, the park transforms into a winter wonderland with skating rinks and tubing fun for the kids.
