Gîte le Repos du Guerrier

$ | 136 boul. Montagnais, Sept-Îles, G4R 5R2, Canada

An adjoining gallery featuring indigenous artists’ works gives this inn an interesting local flavor. Paintings of and by native peoples make up most of the collection. The sense of place carries into rooms, where natural wood door frames and ceilings provide a winter lodge affect, and bright reds and greens pop like woodland colors on a fall day. A claw-foot tub and chandelier give one bathroom an unexpected regal feel.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Close to a ski resort
  • Interior design provides sense of place

Cons

  • Shared bathrooms
  • Laundry service has a surcharge
  • No pets

Hôtel Sept-Îles

$ | 451 rue Arnaud, Sept-Îles, G4R 3B3, Canada

The waterfront site is the big attraction here, and if you score a room with a balcony you'll be treated to sunset views over the St. Lawrence River and its islands. Accommodations are walking distance to the beach, and the friendly staff and close proximity to pubs and restaurants are desirable, too. The location helps make up for some of the shortcomings, mainly the need for upgrades as the hotel starts to show its age. Ask for one of the executive rooms, which were upgraded in 2009.

Pros

  • Hearty breakfast
  • Whirlpools in some rooms
  • Refrigerators in rooms

Cons

  • Dated bathrooms
  • Tired decorations
  • Not possible to book a particular room in advance
