7 Best Bars in Old Montreal (Vieux-Montreal), Montreal

Background Illustration for Nightlife

Once a tourist trap full of overpriced souvenirs, Old Montréal is now home to a mix of top-notch restaurants and chic lounges. During the summer you can enjoy stunning views of the river from some of the city's best rooftop terraces. Excellent dining can be found along rue St-Paul, while rue McGill is a big part of the 5-à-7 scene.

El Pequeño Bar

Fodor's Choice

Owned by the same people behind Coldroom, El Pequeño Bar really lives up to its name: the bar seats only nine, it's that small. For all its diminutive size El Pequeño packs a big punch, having been named one of Canada's top 50 bars in early 2020, ranking at no. 4, in addition to placing 29th in North America's Top 50 in 2022. Adorned with an ornate glass chandelier, white marble countertops, and dozens of Caribbean rum bottles behind the bar, this pocket-sized spot is an homage to the 1920s Havana hotel lobby bar. Gifted cantineros (bartenders) specialize in mixing Cubanos and other rum-based cocktails while recounting tales of Ernest Hemingway in his Havana period. In summer, there's a good-sized terrace outside.

Coldroom

No advertised street number. A secret, nondescript steel door in the back. Imaginative, award-winning mixologists. A cocktail selection that changes with the seasons. Twists on old classics (think: an Old Fashioned with mezcal). Clear, no-nonsense house rules:

"Act your age, or you'll be required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian."

"For all make out purposes, may we suggest our next door neighbour the William Gray hotel? Get a room."

And just for the men: "Know your alcohol limits. Stay classy."

"Erase the word 'slut' and 'gay' and any other abusive language from your vocabulary."

"Learn some dance moves. If you need help, ask our manager, Dan."

To be admitted, simply push the button and wait for the light to flicker red. What more could you want in a speakeasy?

Lola Lola Lolita

A relatively new addition to Old Montréal, Lola Lola Lolita opened in 2021. The club hosts reggaeton nights on Fridays and big bands on Saturdays, playing bachata, merengue, salsa, and the occasional mariachi. Drinks range from beers to sangrias and classic Latin cocktails such as mojitos, margaritas, and Caipirissimas, as well as virgin cocktails. Appetizers like ceviche, guacamole, Colombian empanadas, chicken wings, and mamalon tacos are also on offer.

Maison St-Paul

Sharpen your swords! This chic bar highlighting Champagne and other bubblies is the perfect place to break open a bottle—literally. The staff like to open the bottles of Champagne with sabers, a practice that adds an element of fun and drama to an accessible venue. Finger foods include oysters, beef tartare, caviar, and calamari.

Modavie Wine Bar

With a French and Mediterranean menu, an attractive sidewalk terrace, and a sophisticated interior that contrasts dark wood against stone walls, this jazz bar is pleasing to the eyes and ears. Despite being spread out over two floors, the space still feels cozy. Live duos play during the first part of the week, while weekends showcase full bands. There's never a cover charge.

Philémon Bar

You can grab a glass of one of Philémon's well-priced private import selection of Cava, Prosecco, or Champagne to accompany the menu at this bar, which serves more than the usual pub fare (oysters, anyone?). It's packed with locals Thursday through Saturday—in fact, it's become quite the singles hangout. Bouncers keep the ratio of guys to gals at a comfortable level.

Terrasse sur l'Auberge

For an unbeatable view of the Old Port and numerous Montréal landmarks, head to this unpretentious patio on the roof of the Auberge du Vieux-Port hotel. Open from May through mid-October, it's a great place to soak up the last of the sun's rays and watch the International Fireworks Festival—if you're early enough to snag a table—while enjoying cocktails and a light tapas menu. Try the clear sangria (made with peach Ciroc, Cointreau, white wine, and Sprite).
