Fodor's Expert Review Fogo Island Inn
Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Fodor's Choice
Everything about this place, perched on the very edge of the continent, invites superlatives—stunning modern architecture and interior design, breathtaking ocean views, exquisite cuisine, advanced technology, and renowned hospitality. As a part of the Shorefast Foundation's entrepreneurial and deeply philosophic social enterprise, the Fogo Island Inn is even more than its initial awe-striking impression. The stunning modern architecture houses an all-points luxury resort perched on stilts overlooking the ocean; it is a simultaneous cauldron of new ideas and an immersion in calm and comfort. The building itself, forming to the landscape without hint of compromise, looks like an incarnation of infinity. Your room will hang over the ocean, musicians will play by a fire among crashing waves, and extended families and the secretly famous will lounge among hand-knit pinwheel pillows and uniquely Fogo Island Inn furnishings. The bartender will smoke your cocktail glass with burned cinnamon before pouring your drink, and, if you could afford it, you would never, ever leave. If you cannot stay at the inn, you can still come for a tour and eat at the restaurant, which will not break the bank but will blow your mind and require a reservation.
