Bear Mountain Golf & Country Club. Built near the top of a 1,100-foot mountain about 30 minutes north of Victoria, this purpose-built resort is home to Canada's only Nicklaus-designed 36-hole duo. Created by Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, the rugged Mountain Course is known for its elevation changes and views—especially from the 14th hole, which is built on a cliff ledge with striking views across the city. The more user-friendly Valley Course offers plenty of challenge at a slightly lower elevation. The two courses are the centerpiece of a resort that includes a hotel, a spa, and several restaurants. 1999 Country Club Way, off Millstream Rd. and Bear Mountain Pkwy., West Shore, Victoria, British Columbia, V9B 6R3. 250/744–2327; 888/533–2327; www.bearmountain.ca.
