Sea Star Estate Farm and Vineyards

North Pender Island Fodor's Choice

There are actually two vineyards on this lovely 26-acre property—the upper vineyard clings to Mount Menzies while the lower trails down to the sea—both kept trim by a resident flock of small Babydoll Southdown sheep. Vintages from the first two years proved so popular that the vineyard has now increased to maximum production capacity. The award-winning Ortega and Blanc de Noir continue to sell out. Enjoy appetizers from Truss Farm Food in the licensed picnic area off the Tasting Room.

Averill Creek Vineyard

It's all about the Pinot Noir at this estate winery. Even the rosé is 100% Pinot Noir. In the tasting room, take the Pinot glass test to learn why the shape of the glass makes a difference to where you taste the wine on your palate (mid-palate being ideal for the delicate nature of Pinot). Try the Charme de L'Ile and Prevost Foch Cab before heading out to the patio overlooking the ocean with your favorite bottle and something off their snack menu or your own picnic. This is the perfect place to start or end a trip through the Cowichan Valley.

Black Hills Estate Winery

On the Black Sage Bench between Osoyoos and Oliver, Black Hills Estate Winery has developed a cult following among Okanagan aficionados and frequently sells out of its much-admired wines. When the wine sells out, however, the tasting room sets some aside for visitors. It's worth calling to check on the status of its Nota Bene (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc), Alibi (Sauvignon Blanc with a bit of Sémillon), Chardonnay, or whatever the winemaker dreams up next.

This small estate vineyard on a south slope overlooking Somenos Lake is a labor of love for husband-and-wife team Mike and Robin Nierychlo. The property includes The Tractor Shed guest house, a 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom guest house, complete with a six-guest hot tub on the deck overlooking the lake. Canada is the world's largest producer of ice wine, a specialty of Ex Nihilo Vineyards, a 25-minute drive north of Kelowna. Visitors can take a cidery and tasting tour at noon on Saturdays or a spirits and brandy tour on Sundays. Lunches of local fare served on the orchard-view patio. Mission Hill Family Estate

Sitting atop a hill overlooking Okanagan Lake, Mission Hill Family Estate is recognizable for its 12-story bell tower. It was built, as the owner describes it, to resemble "a combination monastery, Tuscan hill village, and French winery." With a vaulted cellar blasted from volcanic rock, the well-established vineyard produces a wide variety of award-winning wines and offers several different winery tours, from a basic 60-minute tour with a tasting of three wines, to a more in-depth visit that includes wine-and-food pairings. An outdoor amphitheater hosts art events, music, and theater. The Terrace Restaurant is one of the Kelowna area's best dining options.

Therapy Vineyards and Inn

With wines that carry such names as Super Ego, Pink Freud, and Freudian Sip, you may feel like running for the analyst's couch. But never fear, this small vineyard combines its whimsical humor with a number of quality wines, especially its Merlot and Pinot Noir varietals. The winery often hosts special weekends focusing on culinary and yoga programs. But with only a handful of rooms (five modern boutique-style suites), most participants reserve early or stay elsewhere.
