Mía Reef Isla Mujeres

$$$$ | Calle Zazil-Ha s/n, Isla Mujeres, 77400, Mexico

Situated on tiny Isla Yunque, which is connected to the northern tip of Isla Mujeres by a long wooden bridge, this is one of the island's best all-inclusive options, where many of the studios have ocean-view balconies. Between the freestanding studios and the main tower are a palapa restaurant, a private beach, and swinging beach beds suspended from ropes. The greatest draw is the Baño del Rey (King’s Bath), a warm, natural pool that's accessible only to hotel guests. Be warned: this still operates as an Avalon time-share resort, and preference is given to those who bought into the members program.

Pros

  • Beautiful location
  • Calm bay great for swimming
  • Small but well-appointed spa

Cons

  • Mosquitos can be a problem
  • Some rooms lack views
  • Uninspiring dining options

$$$$ | Polígono 1. Fracción D. Fraccionamiento Diamante, Cabo San Lucas, 23473, Mexico

Occidental at Xcaret Destination

$$$$ | Carretera 307, Km 282, Xcaret, 77710, Mexico

In such an enormous all-inclusive, it's surprising to find staff members who go out of their way to make your stay pleasant, beginning with a glass of tropical juice at registration and continuing with helpful concierge service throughout your stay. Book the larger, pricier Royal Level rooms  for even more personalized service—there's a small reception office serving these 45 rooms exclusively. Paradero Todos Santos

$$$$ | La Mesa, Todos Santos, 23300, Mexico

No lodging in Todos Santos has a more spectacular location than Paradero, which is set within an organic farming community and offers panoramic vistas of desert, mountains, and the Pacific Ocean. Paradero's name, which loosely translates to "a stop along the way," is inspired by their clientele (a majority of guests come as an add-on to Los Cabos or as part of a larger trip around the Baja). The design-forward space is an Instagrammer's paradise, with sleek concrete structures and towering cacti serving as dreamy photo backdrops. Guests can sign up to join different group experiences each day, like a walk around town or sunset viewing at the beach (complete with a bottle of wine). This is an adults-only property, and everything about it is subtly romantic, so noncouples might feel a bit awkward. Aside from dining on-site, there's not much to do once the sun sets; all communal space is outdoors and minimally lit, the rooms intentionally forgo television sets, and there's not a single business to patron within walking distance. Having a rental car is a must if you plan to spend time in town, as the hotel charges a 400% markup on the 10-minute ride to/from.

Pros

  • Every room has private, scenic outdoor space
  • Michelin-recommended restaurant
  • Daily off-site activities and tours are included

Cons

  • Very remote location
  • Pretentious atmosphere
  • Rooms lack basic amenities

This all-inclusive offers flash and class in a Vegas-meets-cruise-ship environment with 14 restaurants, 11 bars, and nearly 1,000 rooms housed in two buildings—the adults-only La Perla and the family-friendly La Esmeralda, where extras for the kids include PlayStations, nightly turndown with milk and cookies, and a pool area that looks like a water park. Consider purchasing the Nikté Upgrade package, which includes a water ritual at YHI Spa, an activities menu for kids and teenagers, and private whirlpool tubs. The two resorts are connected by way of the restaurants and bars, however, certain establishments are only open to La Perla guests, who pay higher rates.

Sandos Finisterra

$$$$ | Blvd. Marina, Cabo San Lucas, 23410, Mexico

Sandos Finisterra, whose name means "Land's End" in Latin due to its privileged location at the Baja peninsula's southernmost point, offers guests the best of both worlds: the quintessential all-inclusive experience while being just steps from downtown. One of Cabo's most historic properties, part of Finisterra is built into the cliffside, resulting in gravity-defying rooms jutting out from the mountain and boulders organically decorating the spa's interior. Thanks to its breathtaking views, the resort hosts multiple weddings every week of the year (which has included, most famously, that of Rolling Stone Keith Richards; photos from the iconic ceremony can be seen on display).

Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort

$$$$ | Av. Paseo de los Pescadores s/n, 23400, Mexico

The first of the all-inclusive chains to reach La Playita, this adults-only resort has swim-up rooms, ocean views, seven restaurants, and a 13,000-square-foot spa by Pevonia. With 500 rooms overlooking the ocean and golf course, the property dwarfs neighboring hotels in the area. There’s practically no reason to leave this slice of heaven, with activities like tennis, archery, cooking classes, beach volleyball, tequila tastings, bike tours, and golf. There is even a batting cage and shooting range. The contemporary Mexican decor throughout the rooms, with rich dark woods and colors in burnt-red and gold, are reminiscent of a hacienda. Palapas dot the beach for shade, and the main pool has mini islands with palm trees. Ground-floor rooms have swim-up patios but lack ocean views. The property is enormous, so if excessive walking is an issue, request a room closer to building No. 1 where the lobby is located.

Pros

  • Nightly entertainment shows
  • Plenty of activities
  • Caters to adults

Cons

  • Beach not swimmable
  • Annoying timeshare pitches

Las Alamandas

$$$$ | Carretera 200, Km 85, Tenacatita, 48850, Mexico

Personal service and exclusivity lure movie stars and royalty to this low-key resort in a thorn-forest preserve about 1½ hours from both Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. Suites are filled with folk art; their indoor-outdoor living rooms have modern furnishings with deliciously nubby fabrics in bright, bold colors and Guatemalan-cloth throw pillows. Request a TV, DVD player, and movie from the library for an evening in; there's little else to do at night. There's lots more to do in the daytime, however, including picnics anywhere on the property and boat rides on the Río San Nicolás. There's a 10% service charge and a two-night minimum; the average stay is seven nights.
