Casa Solana

$$ | Carretera Escenica a Las Gatas, Zihuatanejo, Mexico

This new seven-room B&B is one of the more remote in Zihuatanejo, and the location has its plusses (tranquillity, sweeping bay views) and its minuses (it's a long walk to get anywhere, so expect to take a lot of cabs). Suites are spacious and airy, nicely decorated in neutral tones and polished concrete, each with its own private entrance, though the cheapest garden-view room is a bit cavelike. The grand suites have vaulted, exposed-beam ceilings, outdoor showers, and bay-view terraces equipped with lounge chairs and hammocks. A tasty breakfast is served daily in a palapa overlooking the infinity pool and small sundeck; with only a few snack options available (guacamole, quesadillas), it's not the best place to lounge poolside all day, though there is an honor bar stocked with beer, wine, and juice for those who want to do just that.

Pros

  • Similar views as nearby luxury properties at a fraction of the price
  • Rate includes full breakfast
  • Amiable, eco-conscious hosts

Cons

  • No formal restaurant
  • No beach access
  • Far from town
  • Native jungle birds squawk loudly in the mornings

La Posada

$$ | Av. Lázaro Cardenas 201, Manzanillo, 28210, Mexico

Only one of the famous old iron keys and antique locks remain, but the vibe that permeates this bright-pink beachfront lodging is as special as ever. The large, open-air living-dining-bar area has rustic walls and equipale (pigskin and wood) furnishings. Only a few rooms have balconies, but all have screened windows. Macan Ché Garden Hotel

$ | Calle 22 305, Izamal, 97540, Mexico

Each artsy bungalow here has its own themed decor—the Asian room has a Chinese checkers board and origami decorations, while the Safari room has artifacts from Mexico and Africa. As a result, the gated property feels like a hidden village, with bungalows spread throughout. The "hacienda building" at the back of the grounds has five rooms that can also be rented by the month. Maya Luna

$$ | Carretera Mahahual-Xcalak, Km 5.2, Mahahual, 77940, Mexico

Far from the boardwalk, this small inn on the beach is a quiet, relaxing place, where the cabanas have simple concrete rooms—with private roof decks where you watch the moon rise from the sea—and the decor is a mishmash of styles with painted murals and Mexican blankets. You'll be tempted to spend much of your time outside, though, perhaps in one of the hammocks that sway under palapa umbrellas. Families might want to request Room 3, which accommodates four people. The Dutch owners are often in their small restaurant, where photos of Frida Kahlo, Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, and other Mexican notables line the walls. Guests are served complimentary breakfast there; nonguests often show up between 3:30 and 8 pm to dine on specialties like the stuffed pineapple and get away from the bustle of town.

Pros

  • Quiet, spacious beachfront location
  • Nice restaurant open to the public
  • Relaxed atmosphere

Cons

  • No a/c, TVs, or refrigerators in rooms
