Mesón del Alférez

$ | Sebastián Camacho 2, Xalapa, 91000, Mexico

A royal lieutenant of the Spanish viceroy lived in this colonial house some 200 years ago. Rooms surround three small bougainvillea-covered courtyards and have lovely hand-carved wood headboards, Talavera lamps, and hand-loomed bedspreads. Mesón's friendly, dedicated founders have also opened additional hotels in Xalapa and Coatepec, which can be found at the Web site.

Mía Reef Isla Mujeres

$$$$ | Calle Zazil-Ha s/n, Isla Mujeres, 77400, Mexico

Situated on tiny Isla Yunque, which is connected to the northern tip of Isla Mujeres by a long wooden bridge, this is one of the island's best all-inclusive options, where many of the studios have ocean-view balconies. Between the freestanding studios and the main tower are a palapa restaurant, a private beach, and swinging beach beds suspended from ropes. The greatest draw is the Baño del Rey (King’s Bath), a warm, natural pool that's accessible only to hotel guests. Be warned: this still operates as an Avalon time-share resort, and preference is given to those who bought into the members program.

Pros

  • Beautiful location

Occidental Tucancún

$$ | Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 14, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

Shoppers appreciate this lively resort's proximity to a couple of malls, but there’s plenty here to keep non-shoppers occupied, too—including volleyball games and water-polo matches in the activities pool. Paradero Todos Santos

$$$$ | La Mesa, Todos Santos, 23300, Mexico

No lodging in Todos Santos has a more spectacular location than Paradero, which is set within an organic farming community and offers panoramic vistas of desert, mountains, and the Pacific Ocean. Paradero's name, which loosely translates to "a stop along the way," is inspired by their clientele (a majority of guests come as an add-on to Los Cabos or as part of a larger trip around the Baja). The design-forward space is an Instagrammer's paradise, with sleek concrete structures and towering cacti serving as dreamy photo backdrops. Guests can sign up to join different group experiences each day, like a walk around town or sunset viewing at the beach (complete with a bottle of wine). This is an adults-only property, and everything about it is subtly romantic, so noncouples might feel a bit awkward. Aside from dining on-site, there's not much to do once the sun sets; all communal space is outdoors and minimally lit, the rooms intentionally forgo television sets, and there's not a single business to patron within walking distance. Having a rental car is a must if you plan to spend time in town, as the hotel charges a 400% markup on the 10-minute ride to/from.

Pros

  • Every room has private, scenic outdoor space
  • Michelin-recommended restaurant
  • Daily off-site activities and tours are included

Cons

Parador de Alcalá

$$ | Macedonio Alcala 301, Oaxaca, 68000, Mexico

Opened in 2014, this is Oaxaca’s newest lodging option, providing a modern take on the traditional Mexican hotel. With an excellent location on the main pedestrianized thoroughfare, you'll have easy access to museums, bars, and restaurants. The real selling point is the rooftop swimming pool where guests can enjoy 360-degree views of the city. The rooms have all the conveniences you would expect (flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, a safe, a dock for your iPhone), and the restaurant has a room-service option. The decoration of the rooms is minimal and lacks Oaxacan flair, but with the city center on your doorstop, you'll want to spend more time there than in your room.

Pros

  • Well-equipped gym
  • Unique rooftop swimming pool
