Los Ángeles Locos

$$$ | Carrertera Federal 200, Km 20, Tenacatita, 49460, Mexico

This all-inclusive 45 minutes north of Manzanillo is the kind of place where you might be tempted to stay for days without leaving the grounds. The major draw here is the lovely secluded bay with jungly mountain backdrop. You might catch a glimpse of turtles, dolphins, or whales while kayaking here or even just sitting on the beach. Things are in need of refurbishing; don't be surprised to see paint-chipped exteriors and furniture that's seen better days. Still, all rooms face the bay; the food is tasty; and there are activities for children, night shows, and a choice of water activities or tours.

Pros

  • Gorgeous beach
  • Lots of activities
  • Secluded grounds

Cons

  • Far from town
  • Dated buildings and rooms

Los Barriles Hotel

$ | Apartado, Postal 50, Los Barriles, 23330, Mexico

If you're looking for a reliable and comfortable place to spend the night, this old-school hotel certainly does the trick. Though the rooms each have two queen beds, there is a flat per person rate for anyone who stays over; solo travelers pay $85, while couples are charged $100. A third or fourth guest (including children over five) are each an additional $25/nightly. The palm-shaded swimming pool has a marlin painted on the bottom, and a bar area with cable television is a good spot to hangout if you want to watch a game, since rooms lack TVs. Guests will have to buy their own booze, but there are a few well-stocked minigroceries nearby. Fishing boat rentals can be arranged in the office, which also has a few books on hand for those in need of a beach read.

Pros

  • Budget-friendly rates
  • Lively swimming pool
  • Complimentary coffee in the morning

Cons

  • Often fully booked
  • Decor is dated
  • No beach or ocean views

Los Colibris Casitas

If you like your accommodations to feel like a warm embrace, you'll love being welcomed at this hillside property, which is completely covered in color between blooming, bird-filled gardens and original wall mosaics. Every casita (which has one- to two bedrooms) has a unique layout and design, and offers the privacy and comfort of a vacation home along with the services and amenities of a boutique hotel. Overlooking the lagoon and ocean, you'll see and hear some interesting wildlife from the grounds (including whales, when in season) as well as a brilliantly starry night sky.

Lumi

$$ | Camino Vecinal, Ejido El Porvenir, Valle de Guadalupe, 22755, Mexico

It’s love that launched this stunning Nordic-inspired container hotel, starting with a romance between a Finnish woman and a Mexican man who turned their marriage into a passion project that beautifully blended both cultures. The result is Lumi (“snow” in Finnish) that visually captures you even before reaching the six container cabins at the end of a dusty road. The Nordic design is impressive to say the least, with rooftop decks where homemade breakfast is served from 8 to 10 am. Across the horizon is their 9-acre vineyard and orchard where four canvas tents are perched for an affordable glamping experience. Each has "wall-to-wall" carpeting, a king-size bed, and shared bathroom. The container cabins have narrow lounge areas, small but adequate bathrooms, and either one- or two bedrooms. In true Finnish style, a sauna is available to guests. A six-person house is also available for a two-night minimum. This property is a favorite among families and pet owners who capitalize on the owners' love for babies and dogs.

Pros

  • Pets stay free
  • Sauna great on cold nights
  • Bikes for use

Cons

  • No walk-ins
  • Must reserve sauna
  • Remote property

LunArena

$$ | Av. Veraniega, 97707, Mexico

Situated as it is at the eastern end of El Cuyo, LunArena offers a trade-off—on the one hand, the beach here is quiet, but, on the other hand, the location means that you'll have to walk a ways to reach other area amenities. Rooms have white plaster walls, understated furnishings, and small kitchenettes. The hotel restaurant serves breakfast and Mexican, Italian, and American favorites in the evening. The small pool is best for just a quick dip after a swim in the ocean.

Macan Ché Garden Hotel

$ | Calle 22 305, Izamal, 97540, Mexico

Each artsy bungalow here has its own themed decor—the Asian room has a Chinese checkers board and origami decorations, while the Safari room has artifacts from Mexico and Africa. Some have skylights or hammock chairs on a front porch; all have screened windows and are surrounded by gardens with bamboo, birds-of-paradise, and bougainvillea. As a result, the gated property feels like a hidden village, with bungalows spread throughout. The "hacienda building" at the back of the grounds has five rooms that can also be rented by the month. There is a cenotelike pool and a palapa restaurant offering salads and other healthy fare.

Pros

  • Great price

But with a bar and a restaurant (that mainly serves fresh seafood and Mexican dishes), many guests feel they have everything they need on the resort grounds. Even the simple, clean bungalows feel private, as they're in palapas separated from other palapas by redbrick footpaths and well-manicured lawns.

Marina Fiesta Resort & Spa

$ | Marina, Lots 37 and 38, Cabo San Lucas, 23410, Mexico

Location, location, location: Marina Fiesta's may be the very best in town, and that, coupled with an extraordinarily reasonable nightly rate make it a top choice for an interesting mix of guests: fishermen, families, and college-age partiers. An optional all-inclusive add-on gives you unlimited access to not only the bars and restaurant on-site, but the neighboring venues that line a stretch of Marina Cabo San Lucas called the Golden Zone. It's a bit of a tourist trap, however, so true foodies are advised to spend their coin dining elsewhere.

Pros

  • Located right on the marina
  • Great value for the price
  • Close to everything

Cons

  • Subpar dining

Marival Emotions Resort and Suites

$$$ | Paseo de los Cocoteros at Blvd. Nuevo Vallarta, 63735, Mexico

Come here if you're looking for an all-inclusive bargain with a wealth of activities. On the one hand, rooms have strong air conditioning and amenities like hair dryers, irons, and ironing boards; on the other, they have small tubs, cheap doors, and uninspired modern decor. There's an extra charge, inexplicably, for the use of in-room safes. Only a few units have ocean views, but there are plenty of individual palapas and lounge chairs at the beach. If you go to bed early, avoid the Club building, with a downstairs karaoke bar that goes on until midnight.

Pros

  • Immaculately kept grounds
  • Premium booze brands

Cons

Maya Luna

$$ | Carretera Mahahual-Xcalak, Km 5.2, Mahahual, 77940, Mexico

Far from the boardwalk, this small inn on the beach is a quiet, relaxing place, where the cabanas have simple concrete rooms—with private roof decks where you watch the moon rise from the sea—and the decor is a mishmash of styles with painted murals and Mexican blankets. You'll be tempted to spend much of your time outside, though, perhaps in one of the hammocks that sway under palapa umbrellas. Families might want to request Room 3, which accommodates four people. The Dutch owners are often in their small restaurant, where photos of Frida Kahlo, Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, and other Mexican notables line the walls. Guests are served complimentary breakfast there; nonguests often show up between 3:30 and 8 pm to dine on specialties like the stuffed pineapple and get away from the bustle of town.

Pros

  • Quiet, spacious beachfront location
  • Nice restaurant open to the public
  • Relaxed atmosphere

Cons

  • No a/c, TVs, or refrigerators in rooms
