On the dirt road to Playa Avellanas, just before you hit the water, is the appropriately named Beach Box—a breakfast joint serving fresh-squeezed juices and fat breakfast burritos wrapped in parchment paper and served in wicker baskets. It’s no more than a shipping container kitchen attached to a bamboo-shaded patio. Despite the simple setting, there’s no skimping on ingredients, with soft flour or corn tortillas packed with organic chicken, spicy beef, or shredded pork. Vegans will enjoy the fried plantain slices, black-bean dips, homemade salsas, ripe avocados, and tomatoes roasted on an open grill. And the tortilla chips (made from scratch) make it impossible to eat just one. This glorified taco stand is popular with Marriott guests who walk down the beach for hearty breakfasts costing less than the tip they’d leave back at the resort.
