13 Best Hotels in Central Valley, Costa Rica

Background Illustration for Hotels

Most international flights come into Costa Rica in the evening and head out early in the morning, meaning you likely have to stay your first and last nights in or near San José, and the Central Valley can be considered "near." For getting away from it all and still being close to the country's main airport, the lodgings around San José make splendid alternatives to staying in the city itself. It may pain you to tear yourself away from that beach villa or rain-forest lodge, but you can still come back to something distinctive here on your last night in Costa Rica. Small mom-and-pop places, sprawling coffee plantations, nature lodges, and hilltop villas with expansive views are some of your options. The large chains are here as well, but the real gems are the boutique hotels, many of which are family-run places and have unique designs that take advantage of exceptional countryside locations. Subtropical gardens are the norm, rather than the exception, and air-conditioning is usually not necessary.

Studio Hotel Boutique

$$ | Santa Ana, Costa Rica Fodor's Choice

You might miss one of the Central Valley’s snazziest hotels amid all the development that Santa Ana has to offer, but inside is that proverbial oasis, which doubles as one of the country’s largest private art collections. Modern and contemporary Costa Rican art adorn the hotel’s public areas, including its elegant Katöwa restaurant and third-floor bar with adjoining rooftop pool. The starkly modern rooms gleam with lots of white and tan furnishings. All that and the attentive staff come at very reasonable rates.

Pros

  • Quiet oasis amid urban development
  • Amazing art collection
  • Has a pool, a rarity in the Central Valley

Cons

  • Can be difficult to find
  • Best to have a car to stay here
  • Far from sights

Buena Vista Chic Hotel

$$ | Road to Poás, Alajuela, 20103, Costa Rica

Perched high above Alajuela, this hotel's superb staff make up for the somewhat dated, uninspired interior, and it does have the "good view" it is named for, although most rooms overlook the lawns or pool area. Three balcony rooms on the second floor in back have decent views of the Central Valley, but even better are the views of Poás Volcano from the three rooms above the lobby. Mostly, the view is best appreciated from the back lawn. Rooms are fairly standard—carpeted and sparsely decorated, with small baths and TVs. The restaurant behind the lobby serves international dishes and grilled items. The hotel offers numerous Web-only packages.

Pros

  • Excellent service
  • Family-friendly
  • Great views from some rooms

Cons

  • Mediocre restaurant
  • Farther from the airport than other options
  • Best to have a car to stay here

City Express San José Costa Rica

$$ | Autopista General Cañas, San Antonio, Costa Rica

This comfy Mexican chain with minimalist decor, now a division of Marriott, has an outlet in Costa Rica and a stay here puts you just a few miles from Juan Santamaría airport. Think of it as a Latin American counterpart to Holiday Inn Express. The predominant clientele are business travelers on a moderate budget, but all are welcome, of course. Rooms consist of uniformly tan woods and tiles with splashes of color in the spreads and wall hangings, and floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of light. All rooms contain a desk and work area. Rates include an ample breakfast buffet.

  • Bargain rates for what is offered
  • Proximity to airport
  • Ample breakfast buffet

Cons

  • Sameness of a chain hotel
  • Tricky road access to get here off highway

Guayabo Lodge

$$ | Turrialba, Costa Rica

If fresh mountain air appeals to you, this upscale mountain retreat has comfortable rooms, a first-class restaurant, and spacious, glassed-in sitting areas to enjoy unbeatable volcano and valley views by day and blazing fireplaces by night. The large standard rooms are furnished with a tasteful mix of antiques and folk art, and upstairs rooms have private balconies. The new suites, in a separate two-story building, have kitchenettes and flat-screen satellite TV. Goats, chickens, and ducks on the property help supply the kitchen, which prepares a mix of creative, light tropical cuisine and heartier dishes, including duck stew and seared duck breasts. Cooking classes can be arranged with a local Costa Rican chef. Outside, there are sunny sitting areas in the garden and a path lined with orchids.

Hotel Alta Las Palomas

$$ | 2½ km (1½ miles) west of Paco shopping center, on old road between Santa Ana and Escazú, Santa Ana, 10903, Costa Rica

The view from this hotel perched on a hillside above Santa Ana is impressive, but so is the building itself with its blend of colonial and modern style—think archways, hardwoods, and leather. Guest rooms are spacious, with handcrafted furniture and bathrooms with hand-painted tiles; ask for one on the fourth or fifth floor to take advantage of the view. The restaurant, La Luz, has plenty of windows for admiring the distant hills and the pool and gardens below. The eclectic and unusual menu includes rack of lamb with organic coffee sauce and Caribbean-style sea bass with coconut-milk sauce.

Hotel Robledal

$$ | 400 meters west of Iglesia El Roble, Alajuela, Costa Rica
A robledal is an oak grove in Spanish, and ample oak trees shade the grounds of this quiet oasis not far from the airport. Although constructed only in the early 2000s, the main building resembles an old coffee-plantation house, and accommodates the reception area, típico restaurant, and conference room. The 15 rooms are scattered in several units around the property and most are bright and airy. You’ll find amenities here such as big-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and a pool—none of which are common in Central Valley lodgings. A free airport shuttle operates from 5 am to 11 pm.

Hotel Villa Los Candiles

$$ | Santa Ana, 10901, Costa Rica

You'd never expect to find such a quiet, homey oasis smack-dab in the middle of a suburban business neighborhood, but here it is. The hotel's buildings date from 2008, but they are constructed in the style of typical 19th-century Costa Rican coffee-plantation houses. The structures surround a garden courtyard where breakfast is served. Standard rooms and suites are bright and cheery, with tiled floors and king- or queen-size beds, and the suites have kitchenettes with refrigerators and microwaves for not much more money. Breakfast is not included in the suite price however. Santa Ana is warm enough that you'll appreciate the pool and air-conditioning here, too. Special rates are available for long-term stays.

Pros

  • Attentive staff
  • Suites have kitchenettes
  • Pet-friendly

Cons

  • Can be difficult to find
  • Hot water sometimes takes time to heat up
  • Middle of busy commercial area

This sophisticated lodging offers dark-wood queen or king rooms in units scattered around a coffee plantation. Junior suites are the best value; they’re more spacious than standard rooms and come with a kitchenette, but don't cost much more. The ample master suites are more expansive still and come with a fireplace. Although affiliated with the restaurant of the same name, the hotel is secluded from the weekend dining crowds.

Pros

  • Amenities such as flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi, which are uncommon in these parts
  • Attentive service
  • Quiet seclusion

Cons

  • All units, especially standard rooms, are a bit dark

La Terraza Guest House

$$ | Grecia, Costa Rica

Several bright, airy, homey cottages and suites scatter around a garden property here and make a great base for exploring the area or staying that first or last night in Costa Rica. It’s a mix of suites and a large apartment—attached to the main building—and two cottages here. All are decorated in bright tropical pastels, and while most of the units are blissfully peaceful, the El Nido does get noise from the nearby busy road. The attentive owners are on-site to tend to your needs. Grecia lies the same distance from the international airport as you would be if you were staying in San José. It’s just in the opposite direction.

Pros

  • Attentive, knowledgeable owners
  • Lovely garden setting
  • Reasonable rates

Cons

  • Need a car to stay here
  • Can be difficult to find
  • One cottage, El Nido, is close to the road

Pura Vida Hotel

$$ | Alajuela, 20103, Costa Rica

Extremely well-informed, helpful owners and proximity to the airport (15 minutes) make this a good place to begin and end a trip, and thanks to its location on a ridge north of town, several of its rooms have views of Poás Volcano. All of them offer tranquility and abundant birdsong. The two rooms in the main house have the best views, but casitas (little houses) scattered around the large garden offer more privacy. These bright and cheery bungalows have small terraces with chairs where guests, typically well traveled, lounge. Continental breakfasts and delicious dinners (by reservation) are served on a covered terrace behind the house. Ask about their books-for-schools program.

Pros

  • Owners active in the local community
  • Stellar breakfast
  • Attentive service

Cons

  • Large dogs may turn off those with less-than-fuzzy feelings for animals
  • Stairs to climb
  • Best to have a car to stay here

Villa San Ignacio

$$ | 2½ km (1½ miles) northwest of the Princesa Marina, Alajuela, 20103, Costa Rica

The friendly Villa San Ignacio, with its classy Spanish-style architecture, proves that affordable does not have to equal generic. Deluxe rooms have terra-cotta tile floors and Guatemalan fabrics; those on the garden side are quieter, and worth the extra $20. A sumptuous breakfast buffet is served on the patio. The restaurant's eclectic selection ranges from straightforward Costa Rican cuisine to fun presentations like ceviche served in a half coconut, which have to be seen (and tasted) to be fully appreciated.  San Ignacio offers frequent web-only discounts.

  • Great for first or last night
  • Excellent service

Cons

  • Roadside rooms can be noisy, opt for garden rooms
