Boutique Hotel Glacier

$$$ | Endweg 55, Grindelwald, 3818, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

You’d never know that this modern hotel originally dates from 1864, since it was completely renovated before its reopening in 2018, but it still includes nods to its past as a gateway to the nearby glacier with design details resembling ice (such as etched glass on the closet doors and ice cube lamps in the inviting lounge area). It has a prime location looking out to Eiger’s North Face, and it's only about a 10-minute walk down to the Eiger Express or up to Grindelwald’s town center. Rooms feature a mountain-influenced color scheme, with dark blues and fuchsia; many have terraces with mountain views, and the honeymoon suite boasts its own whirlpool. Try a well-mixed cocktail or tea in the comfy lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Eiger, or if the weather’s nice, on the large outside terrace. The small spa has a sauna, a hammam, and a relaxation room with waterbeds, plus an outdoor Jacuzzi with views of the Eiger, along with a fitness room. The in-house gourmet restaurant offers creative meals for dinner and a good selection of items for breakfast.

Pros

  • Friendly staff happy to offer travel advice
  • Fresh contemporary design with thoughtful details
  • Superlative mountain views

Cons

  • Not right in the center of town

CERVO Mountain Resort

$$$ | Riedweg 156, Zermatt, 3920, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Homey contemporary rooms done up in warm colors and natural materials have wood floors and beamed ceilings; some of the larger ones include bunk bed alcoves (great for any kids in tow), fireplaces, or in-room saunas. The complex includes five restaurants, two open in summer and three open in winter, including Italian cuisine at Madre Nostra and fondue at Ferdinand. Silver mansards and yellow awnings flag this vast institution as a landmark, though its aristocratic interiors are now filled with cell-phone-chatting travelers. This colossal belle époque folly of stained glass, frescoes, and flamboyant molded stucco opened in 1906 and counts Vladimir Nabokov among its notable former residents (a bronze of the author stands in the lakeside gardens). Honeycombed by dramatic atrium stairwells that look down on marble columns and gleaming floors inlaid with golden coronets, this regal landmark was Henry James's home base when he wrote (and set here) the novella Daisy Miller. Schlosshotel Chastè

$$$ | Tarasp, 7553, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Although many Swiss hoteliers can claim a second generation of family ownership, this hidden treasure boasts 500 years under the Pazeller family's care, who have preserved the bulging, sgraffitied stucco exterior and modernized much of what's behind the magnificently carved Arvenholz wood door. Now part of the Relais & Châteaux group, it started as a farm, then supplied provisions to builders of Tarasp Castle, which looms above. Each room varies a bit—a canopy bed here, an antique trunk there—and the attention to detail is stunning. The highly regarded on-site restaurant offers a wide range of sophisticated local and international dishes. The Grecian-inspired wellness area—with saunas and massage areas—provides ultimate relaxation.

Pros

  • Superb cuisine

Storchen Zurich

$$$ | Weinpl. 2, Zürich, 8001, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

The central location of this airy 660-year-old structure—tucked between the Fraumünster and Kirche St. Peter on the gull-studded bank of the Limmat River—is stunning. Rebuilt in 1939 and renovated in 2016, the modern hotel is impeccable and intimately scaled. It has warmly appointed rooms, some with French windows that open over the water, and plenty of marble offset by a mauve and soft gray palette. Deluxe corner rooms, with views toward both river and lake, are worth fighting for, as are seats at the terrace café, where dessert is the panoramic vista of the Altstadt. It feels slightly Venetian to arrive by 15-minute boat ride from the main station to the hotel's pier.

The renovated lobby and guest rooms are airy, light, and bright, with modern fabrics, contemporary furnishings, and views to the lake and mountains. $$$ | 1 esplanade du Mont Blanc, Neuchâtel, 2001, Switzerland

This thoroughly elegant, gracefully restored 19th-century hotel has a perfect perch on the lakeshore; on a clear day there's a splendid view of the Alps. The warmly lighted interior, with high ceilings and wild-cherry wood, exudes calm. Two-thirds of the spacious guest rooms have lake views, and the generous bathrooms are decked out in white marble. The sophisticated restaurant, O'terroirs, offers some of the best dining in town and a fine selection of wines, also on tap in the comfortingly low-key Véranda Bar. The B-Spa and gym complete the deluxe hotel experience.

Pros

  • High standard of service and facilities rare in region
  • Outstanding views
  • Lakeside location

Cons

  • Too corporate and lacking in character for some
  • Fourth-floor rooms are darker and smaller than the rest
  • Only two-thirds of rooms have a lake view

Bergwelt Grindelwald

$$$ | Bergwelt 4, Grindelwald, 3818, Switzerland

Perched up a small hill toward the western end of town, the Bergwelt is a blend of Alpine lodge and chic abode; it features brown-and-tan rooms with comfy beds, a spa with small indoor and outdoor pools, and a large lobby perfect for watching the scene. Though guest rooms are on the dark side, red plaid accents on the bed frames liven them up. Many rooms include balconies, though not all have mountain views. Suites have fireplaces, and two include private saunas; for larger groups, the hotel also offers apartments and residences with two and three bedrooms. BG’s Grill focuses on (what else?) grilled meats, and the mixologists at the Seven Spirits Bar whip up a fine cocktail. Besides the pools, the Fire & Ice Spa also includes saunas, a relaxation room, treatment rooms, and a fitness room.

Pros

  • Elegant mountain style
  • Just a short walk to the Firstbahn
  • Minibar included in room rates

Cons

  • Rooms a bit dark
  • Service could use improvement
  • No bathtubs

Castello Seeschloss

$$$ | Via Circonvallazione 26, Ascona, 6612, Switzerland

Dating from 1250, this hotel oozes romance, and that doesn't even take into account its garden setting and enviable address across from the waterfront. The interior is rich with frescoes, wood beams, and heavy masonry, lightened with a contemporary touch, and each room is different: a wrought-iron bed in the back tower, a blue wooden canopy bed in Room 205, and a lavish front tower room with a loft. A private courtyard is perfect for summertime dining, or you can just take a dip in the isolated pool.

  • Lakeside rooms have original details
  • Deluxe tower rooms start not much higher than standard doubles
  • Charming, historic atmosphere

Cons

  • The tower loft can be reached only by spiral staircase
