Recommended Fodor's Video

Hotel Euler

$ | Centralbahnpl. 14, Basel, 4002, Switzerland

This 150-year-old landmark, conveniently located near the main train station, has been tastefully renovated throughout to bring out the best of its original features, including elaborate gilt-edged mirrors and stucco ceiling moldings. Cube furnishings in dark leather or red velvet bring it roaring into the 21st century. The bar is split between the reception lounge, where a pianist plays Wednesday through Saturday (4–10 pm), and the comfortable restaurant. In the guest rooms, duvets billow over bed frames in some of the cushier rooms and suites. Hotel Falken

$$$ | Gruebi, Wengen, 3823, Switzerland

Built in 1895, soon after train tracks reached this mountain retreat, the Hotel Falken maintains its turn-of-the-century feel and its family-run friendliness; charming antiques and rich carpets adorn the salons, and the bar is lined with black-and-white photos of the skiers of yore. Chat with friends over drinks, or perhaps tickle the ivories on one of the two pianos. The guests rooms may not have TVs, but nearly all have a balcony for savoring the jaw-dropping views. Dinner is a four- to five-course set menu. In the winter, you can just about ski out the door to a nearby lift.

Hotel Les Armures

$$$$ | 1 rue du Puits-St-Pierre, Geneva, 1204, Switzerland

Original 17th-century stonework, colorful frescoes, painted beams, and tapestries adorn the lobby and some rooms in this low-key luxury hotel near the cathedral; others have clean modern lines and restful deep-brown accents. Cobblestone views and surprising amounts of natural light add a peaceful atmosphere. The hotel's restaurant is one of the city's most popular venues for Swiss specialties (raclette, fondue, etc.)—even (as a discreet plaque by the door announces) Bill Clinton, when U.S. president, came here to sample them.

Hotel Lindenhof Brienz by Crossworld AG

$ | Lindenhofweg 15, Brienz, 3855, Switzerland

Families often settle in for a week or two at this hotel high above the lakefront, their evenings spent by the immense stone fireplace, in the panoramic winter garden, or on the spectacular terrace. The grounds of this 1910 lodge are beautifully manicured, the atmosphere both familial and formal. Guest rooms are quirkily and individually decorated by themes—cheese, forest, flower meadow, and straw hut, to name a few. Children love these hideaways, and families with small ones appreciate that they can dine together by the fire, apart from other guests. Those with lots of luggage will want to call ahead to be picked up from the train station.

Wising up to travelers' quests for "typical" local decor, the owners of this renovated 1780 guesthouse furnished several rooms in authentic Appenzeller style, with embroidered linens and built-in armoires painted with bright designs and naive local scenes—some actually reflecting the views from the window. The Hotel Lucerne—Autograph Collection

$$$ | Sempacherstr. 14, Luzern, 6002, Switzerland

Award-winning French architect Jean Nouvel, who also designed Luzern's Kultur- und Kongresszentrum, focuses on ultrahip design here; parquet floors are this lodging's only remaining old-world touch. Metal blocks act as cupboards, and mirrors, puffy chairs, and dark walls add to the look, but the highlight of each room is the enlarged movie still that covers the ceiling. Films by Federico Fellini, Wim Wenders, and Lars von Trier are represented, among others, and yes, the photograph is positioned so that you see it best while lying down. The Asian-fusion restaurant attracts locals as well as hotel guests.

Pros

  • Heaven for style enthusiasts
  • Hip restaurant and lounge
  • Adjacent to a park

Cons

  • Larger-than-life movie stills and black walls might not appeal
  • Some rooms rather dark
  • Next-door church bells might wake you

Hotel Meisser

$$ | Dorfstr. 42, Guarda, 7545, Switzerland

This picturesque, family-owned hotel, made up of two 17th-century farmhouses, has sgraffiti and flower boxes on the outside, antiques and honey-color pine on the inside, and a luxurious restaurant serving tasty local dishes, with rates including breakfast and dinner. Most of the guest rooms in the main farmhouse are simple and modern, though you can have a splendid carved-pine room if you pay a bit more; to preserve the tranquility, there are no TVs in these rooms. The second renovated farmhouse has a half-dozen suites (with TVs, as well as minibars). The hotel includes a large gym, and guests can book massages and private yoga treatments. The affiliated Meisser Lodge, in a more simple style, and Meisser Romantica, for adults only, offer other accommodation options nearby.

Hotel Monte Rosa

$$ | Bahnhofstr. 80, Zermatt, 3920, Switzerland

Behind the graceful, shuttered facade of this historic hotel, you'll find an ideal balance between modern convenience and history in the original ceiling moldings and Victorian dining hall. Alexander Seiler founded the Monte Rosa, expanding it over the years to its current size. This was the home base of Edward Whymper when he conquered the Matterhorn in 1865, and, not surprisingly, the establishment is a member of Swiss Historic Hotels. Rooms feature impeccable, soft-toned decor; southern views go quickly and cost more. The bar is an après-ski must. The pool and health facilities are shared with sister hotel Mont Cervin.

Pros

  • Old-world charm with modern conveniences
  • In the heart of Zermatt
  • Friendly, attentive staff

Cons

Hotel Murtenhof & Krone

$$ | 1–3 Rathausg., Murten, 3280, Switzerland

In the heart of Murten's Old Town, this cluster of patrician houses dating back to 1428 conjures images of centuries gone by. Yet step inside, and the modern sits well alongside the revered history of this establishment, thanks to the sensibilities of the Joachim family, which has been running the show since 1978. Rooms and suites are individually designed and vary greatly; try out the Royal Senior suite if 16th-century baroque drawing rooms are your thing. The tavern and veranda are pleasant venues for the generous morning spread, and a changing à la carte fine-dining menu keeps you sated in the restaurant.

Hotel Park Villa

$ | Parkstr. 18, Schaffhausen, 8200, Switzerland
Except for the no-nonsense elevator tacked onto the exterior, this belle époque mansion has been transformed into a small hotel with little disruption to its grand but familial style. Many of the original furnishings—inlaid pieces, chandeliers, Persian rugs—remain. The upper floors are modern but retain their eccentric shapes; some have Rhine or fortress views. Hotel Piz Buin Klosters

$$ | Alte Bahnhofstr. 1, Klosters Serneus, 7250, Switzerland

Its generic chalet facade gives no hint at the charm inside this stylish Alpine-theme hotel near the Landquart River; not only do the spacious rooms have working fireplaces, deep soaking tubs, and balconies, but the basement spa also invites lingering with a full-size pool, saunas, and even a unique Himalayan salt room. Rooms include wooden finishes and plaid furnishings, and all have balconies overlooking the village or the mountains; if you’re traveling with family or friends, studios and apartments come with kitchenettes and ample space for four to six guests. Bär’s Restaurant serves up local dishes blended with international flavors, like zander (pike perch) ceviche with a basil-gin marinade, and the attached Grizzly’s Bar is a popular après-ski hangout. Not only does the lovely spa include a swimming pool, whirlpool, saunas, and a steam room, but there’s also a good-size gym, and massages are on offer (with advance booking) to soothe aching muscles after a long day of outdoor activity.
