Hotel Chesa Grischuna

$$ | Bahnhofstr. 12, Klosters Platz, 7250, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Located directly in the town center and renovated from a farmhouse in 1938, the family-run Chesa Grischuna has one of the most charming settings—and, arguably, the friendliest owners—in Switzerland. Every guest room, including those in the nearby chalet annex, embodies mountain coziness with their country prints, fluffy duvets, carved wood, and antiques. Because Klosters has long been a gathering place of international society, this place has plenty of public salons to accommodate guests; whether you bowl in the vaulted cellar, play cards, or dance to the piano music at happy hour, you'll be surrounded by the Klosters cognoscenti. The restaurant is legendary for its chic gemütlichkeit (coziness), with carved-wood trim, romantic lighting, and a delicious mix of salads, soups, and seasonal full-fledged meals—and, fittingly, truly helpful service.

Pros

  • Full of character and a vibrant eclectic social scene
  • Famed restaurant
  • Wonderful, helpful service

Cons

  • Some rooms are on the small side
  • No wellness facilities
  • No elevator

Talk about having it all: this converted 19th-century winegrower's home has stylish rooms with marble bathrooms, a lakefront location, a to-die-for terrace and garden, and even an indoor pool. There's great food available in the bistro and restaurant Wednesday through Sunday, as well as a renowned wine cellar. Located in the Fribourg Vully wine region, the hotel is by the canal that connects the Murten and Neuchâtel lakes. Incidentally, ours means "bear" in French, which explains the teddy bear in each room. The hotel is 3½ km (2 miles) north of Murten.

Hôtel des Trois Couronnes

$$$ | 49 rue d'Italie, Vevey, 1800, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Honeycombed by dramatic atrium stairwells that look down on marble columns and gleaming floors inlaid with golden coronets, this regal landmark was Henry James's home base when he wrote (and set here) the novella Daisy Miller. Burgundy brocade with floral swags and coverlets contrast boldly with striped wallpaper in generously sized guest rooms. The spa, called Puressens (Pure Senses), offers a full range of restorative services that are a relaxing extension to time spent in the lower-level pool. A vast lakefront terrace overlooks the pollards, the promenade, and the steamers plying the lake.

Hotel Eiger

$$$ | Aegerten, Mürren, 3825, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

With a front-row perch directly across from the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, it's no surprise that most rooms at this welcoming family-run hotel flaunt balconies with peak views. Inside, all is comfortably charming: the adorable bar has a big fireplace hood, regular guest rooms come with elegant pine wainscoting, and suites feature exposed timber beams and lovely fabrics. Guest rooms and suites face either the mountains or the forest; alpine-style family suites have a separate living room and sleep up to three kids (along with two adults). In addition, the hotel has room to spare for an indoor pool with staggering views of the snowcapped mountains, not to mention a sauna and hot tub to warm up after a tough day on the slopes, along with a small fitness room if your outdoor adventures weren't enough. If you want to enjoy the high life—in more ways than one—head here.

Hotel Gletschergarten

$$ | Obere Gletscherstr. 1, Grindelwald, 3818, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

A vastly improved version of the standard chalet-style lodging, the Gletschergarten has been in the same family for four generations, and the interior radiates welcome, from heirloom furniture to original paintings by the owner's grandfather to tea roses cut from the garden. There's heraldry in the leaded-glass windows, a ceramic stove with a built-in seat warmer, and a wood-paneled lounge taken from an old Grindelwald farmhouse. All rooms have balconies, some with glacier views, others overlooking the emerald-green hills. Ask for a corner room, as the angles are especially pleasing. The oldest hotel in town, the Hotel Interlaken has been hosting overnight guests since 1323, but now it's thoroughly up-to-date, with comfortable guest rooms filled with sleek and eye-catching Alpine-chic furnishings and a highly regarded restaurant. Hotel Schatzalp

$$ | Schatzalp, Davos, 7270, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

About 950 feet above town on a quiet, car-free slope, this magnificent, if a tad faded, hotel will transport you back to the grand spa days of Davos. Once used as a sanatorium, the hotel's public spaces are now decorated in elegant belle epoque style; the guest rooms are a lot more simple, with basic furnishings and no TVs. Described in Mann's The Magic Mountain, the vast hotel has grounds to match, with fun features like a long hillside slide in summer and a 2½-km (1½-mile) sled run in winter. All south-facing guest rooms have balconies overlooking the looming mountain range. Spend summer afternoons visiting the hotel's botanical garden, or relax in the three sauna and steam rooms. The hotel is accessible only by its own funicular, the Schatzalp-Bahn, a four-minute ride from Davos-Platz near the Hotel Europe.

Pros

Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano

$$$$ | Riva A. Caccia 7, Lugano, 6900, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

This local landmark opened its doors in 1888, and much of the Victorian luster of its common areas—colorful frescoes, crystal chandeliers, ornate antiques—has been respectfully preserved. If you'd like a sleeker room, opt for the newer wing, where discreetly modern rooms are decorated in beige and gold. The balconies and terraces open onto lake or garden views. For the panoramic view of Lake Lugano, head to the Michelin-starred restaurant I Due Sud. Some of the famous clientele, including Sophia Loren, Lauren Bacall, Stevie Wonder, Patti Smith, and Tina Turner, have signed the lobby's livre d'or (guest book).

Pros

  • The historic suites are showstoppers
  • Even the smallest rooms have heated bathroom floors
  • Every detail displays refined luxury

Cons

  • The 1983 wing is less glamorous, more Miami Vice than Pride and Prejudice
  • Grand interiors missing a bit of cozy warmth

Kempinski Palace Engelberg

$$$$ | Dorfstr. 40, Engelberg, 6390, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Light-filled and comfortable, this Scandinavian-Swiss-style reinterpretation of the original 1904 hotel is a stylish blend of restored belle epoque features and modern furnishings in muted pastels, leather, and oak. Kempinski Palace Engelberg flanks the park in the center of Engelberg, its huge windows overlooking the public outdoor stage and jaunty mountainscape crowned by Mt Titlis. A lavish five-year renovation added a new wing to the original structure, building around the historic and structurally exquisite Kursaal events space. The hotel’s now palatial proportions also include a spa beneath the roof, where the indoor infinity pool affords views of paragliders twirling above. Kulm Hotel St. Moritz

$$$$ | Via Veglia 18, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

This luxury hotel can claim its share of St. Moritz superlatives: it was the first hotel here (1856) and the first house to have electricity in all of Switzerland (1878), but modern comfort has come a long way, as seen in top-quality facilities like a 9-hole golf course and putting green, ice-skating and curling in the colder months, and a large variety of in-house restaurants (some open only in winter). Rooms vary between a more traditional and a more modern style; though they differ in size and decor, all feature wood accents and luxe bathrooms. Half-board is usually included in the rates, and guests have a wide range of choices including the Grand Restaurant, a romantic vaulted space, with a menu of international cuisine, Peruvian plates at Amaru, and menus from star chef Mauro Colagreco at the Kulm Country Club. The Kulm Spa features a saltwater grotto, indoor-outdoor pool, and top-notch fitness center (complete with inspired views).

Les Sources des Alpes

$$ | Tuftstr. 17, Leukerbad, 3954, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

When it first opened in 1834, this Relais & Châteaux hotel received tourists on the "Grand Tour" through Europe; now it plays to those who want des vacances cocooning (pampered downtime) in an exclusive setting with its own lovely outdoor thermal pool. There's a lot of white in the decor, which mixes a tasseled-drapery period look with harmonious modern touches. All rooms include a balcony or terrace, and spacious suites have separate living areas with electric fireplaces and flat-screen TVs. Seasonal Mediterranean-inspired food paired with a strong selection of Valaisan wines is served in the Malvoisie restaurant. In the bar it's a pianist, not a DJ, providing the music. Completing the soothing atmosphere is the hotel's thermal spa and beauty center, with its indoor pool, hot-stone therapy, massages, wraps, and body peels—and its pièce de résistance, the outdoor 36ºC (97ºF) waters, where you can relax without the crowds found at the city's public baths.

Pros

Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern

$$$$ | Haldenstr. 10, Luzern, 6002, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

This turreted pastel-yellow waterfront landmark, which opened in 1906 as a Mediterranean-style retreat, was brilliantly renovated by Mandarin Oriental in 2022 pairing classical looks with a touch of postmodernism. Interiors are light- and art-filled, and meld original belle epoque features—the terrazzo tiling and stucco marble pillars are exquisite—with contemporary Asian design in a palette of soft greens, blues, walnut and brass. Rooms feature three-quarter-height paneling, molded ceilings, and textured wallpaper, and showcase the widest possible views: those facing the lake give the impression of being on a boat. There are cozy lighting effects, electronically operated blackout blinds, and touches that make you feel pampered: Dyson hairdryers and Diptyque toiletries come with every room category. Of the four restaurants, the flagship Colonnade is Michelin-starred and overseen by Gilad Peled, former executive chef at Gordon Ramsey Restaurants, and you’ll dine on delicacies such as line-caught sea bass with brassicas or wild venison with foie gras and chocolate, overlooked by artistic masterpieces paired with their contemporary reinterpretations.

Pros

  • Lakefront setting, right off the promenade
  • Two-thirds of rooms face the lake
  • Wide range of connecting rooms

Cons

  • Backs onto a main thoroughfare
  • No direct lake access
  • Attic rooms not suitable for tall people

Mont Cervin Palace

$$$ | Bahnhofstr. 31, Zermatt, 3920, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

The central location and luxurious setting help this Zermatt grande dame stand out, with rooms divided between the main building and connecting annexes. Accommodations are elegant, with woodsy chalet-style touches in keeping with the mountain location. Since the hotel is named after the iconic peak (in French, naturally), most rooms have Matterhorn views. The main restaurant has a light, modern ambience with dishes to match. There are also more casual lunch and dinner options, Grill Le Cervin and Ristorante Capri, a Michelin-rated Italian restaurant open only in winter. Half-board arrangements are available. The hotel reserves covered parking in and transportation from Täsch.

Pros

  • Station pickup in a red antique horse-drawn carriage
  • Wellness and spa facilities that are tops
  • Attentive staff and luxurious accommodations

Cons

  • Big-city luxury removes you somewhat from the village atmosphere
  • Many hotel restaurants open only in the winter
  • Parking and transport cost extra
