Schaukäserei

Modern cheese-making methods are demonstrated at the Schaukäserei, a combination of a factory and a museum. Cheese is made until 3. A self-guided tour (free with the Appenzell Card) reveals the history of the local cheese, and a movie about the region is a surefire way to whet your appetite. The attached restaurant is one of the best places to sample some traditional dishes made with Appenzeller cheese, including a silky cheese soup, gooey fondues and raclettes (melted cheese served with small potatoes in their skins, pickled pearl onions, and gherkins), and a savory Chääsflade (cheese pie). A playground keeps children happy, too.

Schmiedstube

With its spectacular Renaissance portico and oriel dating from 1653, this building is an embodiment of Schaffhausen's state of suspended animation. Framed over the door are the symbols of the tongs and hammer for the smiths, and that of a snake for doctors, who depended on the smiths for their tools and thus belonged to the guild.

Schwabentorturm

Once a part of the city wall, the tower dates from 1361. Inside the arch on the keystone is a relief from 1933 that bears a wise caution for anyone crossing the street: Lappi tue d'auge uf ("Open your eyes, you idiot!"). The tower's counterpart, the Obertorturm, lies just off the Fronwagplatz.

Stadtlounge

Native-born artist Pipilotti Rist's Stadtlounge, created with artist Carlos Martinez, is a public artwork project that has bathed an entire chunk of the city center under a coat of red paint, creating what they call a "red-carpet effect." It has transformed the neighborhood into a sultry "public living room" and has been so successful, it has been enlarged.

Steckborn

Fourteen kilometers (9 miles) east of Stein am Rhein, the town of Steckborn has some fine old houses, including the Baronenhaus and the Gerichtshaus. It's also home to Turmhof Steckborn, a half-timber waterfront castle built in 1320 that currently houses a small local museum containing artifacts from prehistoric times through the Roman and Alemannic settlements.

Textilmuseum

St. Gallen's history as a textile capital dates from the Middle Ages, when convent workers wove linen toile of such exceptional quality that it was exported throughout Europe. The industry expanded into cotton and embroidery before collapsing in 1918. Today St. Gallen dominates the small luxury market for fine handmade textiles, and magnificently historic finery is on view at the Textilmuseum.

Weesen

At the western end of the Walensee, Weesen is a quiet, shady resort noted for its mild climate and lovely lakeside walkway.

Zum Goldenen Ochsen

This late-Gothic building had a Renaissance-style portico and oriel window added to it in 1608. Flanking the windows are three floors of exterior frescoes depicting historic and mythological figures, most from the Trojan War. Sadly, an advertising billboard has also been added to the building.

Zur Wasserquelle and Zur Zieglerburg

This rococo duplex dates from 1738; since they are now private residences, you can see them only from the outside. Across the street are the Tellenbrunnen, a fountain-statue of Wilhelm Tell copied from the 1522 original, and the St. Johannkirche (St. John's Church), whose Gothic exterior dates from 1248.
