Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Empordà

$$$$ Figueres Casual Fodor's Choice

Just 1½ km (1 mile) north of town, this restaurant run by Jaume Subirós–-housed within a rather nondescript, 42-room hotel–-has been hailed as the birthplace of modern Catalan cuisine and has become a beacon for gourmands. The menu changes seasonally and may contain dishes such as cordero lechal al romero, cebollitas, pera, y boniato (suckling lamb with rosemary, onion, pear, and sweet potato) or espárragos de Riumors, al perfume de trufa blanca y pecorino (asparagus from Riumors, with white truffle parfum and pecorino). The decor and service style is a little old-fashioned–-think trolleys piled high with cheese boards and desserts, and waiters in starched jackets–but they, and the diners who come here, are serious about one thing–-the good food. The hotel terrace is a prime spot to sit and enjoy a drink before the feasting commences. It's about a 15- to 20-minute walk from Teatre-Museu Dalí.
