Fodor's Review

In 2014 this emblematic Glasgow building—the most stunning example of the genius of architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh—was badly damaged in a fire that swept through its interior and destroyed its famous library. The facade still exists, to give a sense of Mackintosh's achievement, but the building will not reopen until 2018. For many Glaswegians it felt almost like a personal tragedy. Fortunately, however, there are many other Mackintosh buildings around the city that testify to his originality as artist and architect. Daily walking tours of Mackintosh's Glasgow continue to be organized from the art school shop in Stephen Holl's new Reid Building, spectacular in itself, which sits directly opposite the original School of Art. In all sorts of ways the new school is an homage to the original. A small exhibition within the new school gives a sense of the artist's work.
