Pousada Forte Angra do Heroísmo
From the outside, you’d never know that a modern hotel sits inside the walls of the 16th-century fort perched on a hilltop overlooking the sea on the edge of Angra (but only about a 10-minute walk into town); beyond the historical significance, the cool, contemporary guest rooms, outdoor pools and bar, and sea views make the Pousada a great place to spend the night. Some of the guest rooms, with gray walls, wood floors, and modern art on the walls, have patios with chairs or small balconies; all look out onto the sea. The restaurant serves local cuisine, and offers a Sunday evening fado night with live music and a four-course meal with wines. There’s also a bar that opens onto the courtyard; though it’s not always staffed, someone at the reception will be happy to help when asked. On the grounds you’ll find one pool for adults and one for kids, as well as a Jacuzzi.
