Pousada Forte da Horta

$$ | Rua Vasco da Gama, Faial, 9900-017, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Located inside a 16th-century fort perched directly on the harbor’s edge, this atmospheric hotel offers rooms with balconies overlooking the military cannons positioned next to the fort’s walls. There’s a good-sized outdoor swimming pool with the same gorgeous views from the lounge chairs. Modern rooms are comfortable but a bit on the small side; the sea view rooms are the way to go. The on-site restaurant Sal & Pico serves lunch and dinner, and guests are also a short walk away from a large choice of tempting places to dine in Horta itself.

Pros

  • Sleep in a nationally recognized treasure
  • Chock-full of historical details
  • Wonderful scenery

Cons

  • No fitness center or spa
  • Staff could be more helpful
  • Parking can be an issue

Azoris Faial Garden

$ | Rua Consul Dabney, Faial, 9901-856, Portugal

This collection of pale pink buildings, formerly part of the undersea cable company and perched up the hill from Faial’s harbor, is a little dated, but the lovely and extensive grounds include lots of amenities. These include an outdoor infinity pool with harbor views and a poolside bar, an indoor pool with a whirlpool, sauna, and gym, and balconies off of some guest rooms with prime views of Mt. Pico. Though the hotel is removed from the center of Faial, it’s only a short stroll down the hill to restaurants and bars.

Pros

  • Spacious guest rooms
  • Great mountain views
  • Inviting pool area

Cons

  • Restaurant gets mixed reviews
  • Rooms are in need of a refresh
  • Lackluster service

Hotel do Canal

$ | Largo Doutor Manuel de Arriaga, Faial, 9900-026, Portugal
This somewhat old-fashioned hotel makes up for any shortcomings with a prime location across the street from Horta’s marina, good-sized rooms with comfortable beds, and a staff ready to help when you need it. Since the sea views are the highlight here, book a room with one if you can. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the in-house Clipper restaurant, and guests can order drinks on the terrace while gazing out at the water.

Pros

  • Sauna, whirlpool tub, and Turkish bath
  • Location in the center of town
  • Free parking

Cons

  • Limited breakfast choices
  • Gym needs an update
  • No swimming pool
