Housed in a beautiful 19th-century palace, Casa da Guia combines shopping, art, and gastronomy in grand style. It's poised on a cliff edge west of Cascais, beyond Boca do Inferno, and it's worth the trip out of town for the contemporary art gallery, high-end boutiques, interesting restaurants, and bars with outdoor terraces.

Luís Soares presents his own carefully executed, modern ceramic designs alongside more traditional jugs and plates at Ceramicarte. There's also a small selection of tapestries and an art gallery.

Down the road from Palmela is a wonderful little shop selling hand-painted ceramics and azulejos. On the top floor is a café with an outdoor terrace, which is a great place to take a coffee break and savor some local sweets.

From late June to late August, Estoril hosts a huge open-air arts-and-crafts fair near the casino. Vendors sell local art, crafts, and food and drink every evening until midnight. With live music, dancing, and kid-friendly shows, FIARTIL is a major event on Estoril's cultural calendar. The same location is used for Chefs on Fire ( chefsonfire.pt) in mid-September, which invites several chefs to cook over a large outdoor barbecue.
