Fodor's Expert Review Lx Boutique
Rua do Alecrim 12, Lisbon, Lisbon 1200-017, Portugal, Portugal See on Map
This chic boutique hotel was one of the first of its kind to open in Lisbon and occupies a hip location in one of the city's hottest drinking and dining neighborhoods. Instantly recognizable thanks to its bold blue exterior, the hotel is symbolic of the recent gentrification of Lisbon's Cais do Sodré, which was once a dingy docklands area known for its red-light activity. Taking great pride in its super-central location, the hotel transmits a love of Lisbon: guests are welcomed with an information pack, while rooms are decorated according to themes such as fado music. The location close to a main transport hub makes it an accessible spot to see both the sights of Belém and beaches of the Estoril Coast. A recent extension boosted the number of rooms with river views, which include the Xplendid suite with its retracting glass roof; others have city views. Breakfast is €12 extra in the elegant Confraria restaurant, which serves excellent sushi in the evenings.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The letters "LX" are insider shorthand for Lisboa--see also LX Factory, the uber-trendy shopping/drinking/co-working space in nearby Alcantara.
A vintage-chic theme runs throughout the rooms, each of which is individually-styled, with gorgeous retro fixtures and fittings in pale blues, whites and creams. Rooms have city or river views, and the rooftop suite has a veranda with stunning views across the River Tagus. Larger rooms and suites have dressing areas/lounges.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Street noise comes with the territory in this part of Lisbon--light sleepers should request a room facing away from the bars and clubs.
Bathrooms feature bathtubs and showers, lavender-toiletries and hairdryers. Some are separated from the sleeping area by a frosted glass partition--which may not appeal to all guests!
Ask about the bathroom/bedroom layout if you'd prefer not to have a view of the bedroom from the bathroom--and vice versa!
With artworks commissioned by local artists, the lobby is a masterclass in blending contemporary "LX" cool with old-world chic. The blue and white tones that run through the hotel call to mind Lisbon's famous azulejo tiles, and the carefully-chosen pieces of furniture--from deeply comfortable arm chairs and chaise longues to animal sculptures--reflect a good eye for detail. Guests can sink into the sofas and enjoy free port and custard tarts in the afternoons, which is a super lovely treat after a day's exploring.
Given its clear love of all things Portuguese, it may come as a surprise that the hotel restaurant at LX Boutique specializes in sushi, but the Japanese dishes are served with great aplomb in a restaurant that has a solid reputation among local foodies. Open to non-guests, Confraria LX is a standout restaurant in its own right, and attracts a hip young crowd to socialize over sushi and sashimi.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Confraria now has a concession at the nearby Time Out Market--a gourmet gathering offering a chance to try food from miniature versions of some of the best restaurants in Lisbon.
LX Boutique could hardly be better placed for public transport--trams and buses pass by, while trains, metro, and ferries leave from Cais do Sodre transport terminal. This is the jumping-on point for trains to Cascais and Estoril as well as Alcantara and Belem.
Confraria (1-minute walk) serves terrific sushi and sashimi, and nearby restaurants offer everything from simple set lunches at workaday cafes to fancier options in and around the Time Out Market (4-minute walk).
LX Boutique is very well placed for nightlife--the surrounding streets buzz with drinkers and dancers until dawn. There's no hotel bar, but you'll find all the bars you'll need on nearby Pink Street.
WHY WE LIKE IT
